My 2000 Road King has the greasable fitting. Not sure why it's been taken off, but the old Ultra Kla$$ic is probably on to something with the cost savings thing.
I've had this up for some time. Further down the thread I've listed all the necessary parts, drill bit, tap, zerk fitting and what you have to do to install it.
And just because you have chrome inner primary does not mean that you can't center punch it and drill with out and not ruin it! Just be careful and all will be fine.
Save the money from the shaft and upgrade the linkage to heim joints if you have not done so!
You'll find that you don't have to get the shaft everytime you do a mod, LOL, thats a joke!
The reason I was told that there is no longer a grease fitting in there is the grease traps dirt in there and that is worse than no grease. I don't know if that is right just relaying a message.
With that logic why does the front fork steering tube still have a grease fitting?
IMO someone has not gave the fittings they had a squirt on a maintence cycle and that could have caused an issue! Other then that, how in the world can it hurt?
And who exactly told you this, could it have been someone at a dealership, an Indy or a shade tree?
Actually I "think" the newer bikes have a teflon bushing in them that do not require as much lube as the older ones that had metal bushings. Eitherway you can bet it was/is a cost saving "refinement".
. They actually have metal bushings (on my 2014 SGS). Mine are worn out and very sloppy @ 40,000 miles. Going to replace and add the pingel shaft
I have the Pingel shifter shaft with the zerk fitting and stainless steel heim joints on a stainless steel shift rod. The bike shifts a lot better than it came stock.
I also bought a red high temperature grease to grease it with. Just grease the shaft till all the old grease comes out and the new grease is in place. That way you won't have any grit left in the shifter mount to cause a failure. Don't forget to use a rubber cover for the zerk fitting.

. Think I have given up on replacing the bushings. Tried a slide hammer puller today and the outer bushing will not budge. Just going to have to live with it being loose. Don't want to screw it up. And HAVE to pull the inner primary.
