Default 2 VERY basic Q's

Please don't laugh at me, I was wondering if I have to purchase the $8.00 Harley spark plugs? I found the same ones with a different gap that I would obviously adjust at napa and it' only $2 for 4 instead of $8 for 2. So is that ok as long as I change the gap? Also I need to find out what it is called so i can get a new one. I'm looking for the little srew that goes underneath my throttle for setting cruise control basically. I just use it to help my bike idle the first 3 mins after a cold start. So thanks very much for any and all replies!

I think the screw you are talkin about may just be called the "throttle lock???" And im with Raptor on buying the plugs from HD. There may be no difference whatsoever in the plugs but peace of mind is worth the extra $$$. I believe in almost every case you get what you pay for. Good luck.

Not only do you need the Harley plugs but you'll need the Harley gap plug tool.

Seriously, lots of guys just run the Autolite plugs from the local auto parts store and they run just as good.

If you don't buy the Harley plugs, your bike will no longer be covered under warranty!

That's called the Harley tax - double the price cause it says HD on it. If the plugs are the same, buy the equivalent for the lower price. You will need to adjust the gap on any new plug. Buy a gapping tool, about a buck, where you buy the plugs and adjust the plug to the correct gap. If you're talking about the black plastic wheel to lock the choke it may just be loose. I used to have to tighten mine occasionally when I had a carbureted Sportster. You just put a wrench on the metal nut behind the black plastic wheel (or screw as you call it) and hand tighten the screw. Don't use a wrench you can break the plastic screw or wheel.

There are very few spark plug manufacturers out there, the HD plugs are one of those brands with the HD logo on them made for HD. I've run Champion, AutoLite and Bosch over the years, no problems whatsoever, just make sure you have the right plug for the application.

I believe also Milwaukee1 may be right on "throttle lock" screw or something like that. Just ask at the dealer, they will know exactly what you are talking about.

Some plugs do make a VERY SLIGHT difference. However, there is almost No difference between the HD plugs and the Autolite plugs.

As for the Throttle Lock... That is basically a tensioning screw. Using it to hold the RPM for warm up is not a bad thing. Using it for an improvised Cruise Control IS A BAD THING. A CC will disengage when you roll off or use your brakes. The throttle tension adjustment srew will NOT. That means your bike is getting gas and wanting to GO when you want it to STOP. That can lead to some very bad situations.

You can get replacement screws from the HD parts counter (OEM 563-97A) and JP cycles has one for $3. Part #5000709
