+1 on the polishing compound. I used that last year with my dremel rotary tool, with the polishing pad on and it cleaned up pretty nicely.

Is this safe on clear coats? Because my 09 has a clear coat on the rims.

Thanks for the tip, I ordered some Wheel Guard from these guys today.

I just had my bike in for service, and the dude that cleans the bikes before you pick them up must have sprayed some kind of cleaner all over my bike and not rinsed it all off, because both my hand levers and my front wheel were covered with stains. I spent almost two hours with the Mother's polishing ball trying to get everything off the wheel. I was mostly successful, but I'm going to go at it again once my lift gets here and I can work from a more comfortable height.

Really pissed me off because I've heard how the wheels on the 09s are susceptible to staining, and I've been making an extra effort to keep mine clean...

Had read some of these before I picked my bike up. Seemed to have some minor stains on rims and a whitish substance that I assumed was from some sort of spray on various parts of the bike. Difficult to remove but fortunately water soluable.Wheels were easy, I used HD detail spray, do not remember the actual name HD glaze rings a bell. Wheels cleaned up real nice and the spray seems to protect them well. I had previously used this stuff on my SE chrome wheels with good results also.
