Question do i need a tachometer?

Hey guys. I am picking up my 09 RKC on June 13th. Stage II 103", FatCat 2 into 1. Here is my question: should I put a tachometer on it. Also, have any of you replaced your speedo with the combination tach/speedo from Harley? What do you think?

Tach's are nice but in my opinion not needed.

If your romping on it and are worried about getting close to the red line, are you going to be looking down at the tank or where you're going? I hope where you're going. I've hit the rev limiter a time or two so I know that's when I've gone too far.

But hey, if you have $500 to blow, get one. Those combo's are cool and the lights come in colors.

If you do get one, I'd suggest the small one with the programable shift light.

Mine kicks a$$. But it was a total rip off. Must be genuine HD then!!!

You dont need a tacho, its just a nice to have. When the 124 gets a head of steam up I dont have time to look at the tacho anyhow...

Yeah. That's why I was asking you guys. 500 bones for a gauge seems like a total ripoff. I like being able to check the tach. I guess I just like having the info, but I don't know that it is so important to me that I want to spend $500, and I am unsure how the handlebar mounted tach would look on a touring bike.

I run a windscreen bag so I couldnt have a heads up tach anyhow. I am thinking a shift light mounted on the screen might be a good addition.

I hardly ever look at my tach. I shift by feel, and it's easy to know when your lugging it, and just as easy to know when your pushing it too hard.

I don't think you need one. I went with the handlebar unit. It is easier for me to see.

I am used to it now, and use it more as a speedometer. I can glance at it without

really taking my eyes off the road. See attached picture. Hope this helps you,

When I first got my King, I thought I was going to have to put a tach on it, but a year later, I don't think I will. The way I ride it, I seldom am even running it to redline and you can feel it "plane out" once it's past it's torque peak anyway. On the bottom-end, that is where I would sometimes like to see how LOW my rpm's are getting, but there I also think I have a good feel for when the engine is starting to lug and downshift it. At least in stock tune, it's pretty easy to just feel the motor.

These little digital units are good and unobtrusive for $150.

Harley was the first bike I have ever owned without a tach. It took a few days to get used to it but I say no, you do not need a tach.
