It pays for itself for me, as I have AT& T for a cell phone and get a 20% discount every month on my bill.
            After that I start making $$$ on H O G.
Would I use them for towing, no.
            AAA.

Don't you still have to pay dues to belong to a Chapter?

Yes, in addition to being a member of the main HOG.

Yes the HOG membership is only for the national chapter. Every place I have live you still had to join the local chapter to receive any discounts from that dealer.

I and my wife are life members, paid for the lifetime package a few years ago when we had some extra income.

Also if you are joining for the towing the AMA has a much better tow program. They pretty much tow anything you own that has wheels. I used it to tow my wives truck several times. A friend of mine found out the hard way that his AAA membership that he had for decades would not send someone out to help help change a trailer wheel.

            AAA.

This is the reason I almost joined. My bill is $97 and change. Roughly $20 saved a month on a cell phone bill. Roughly $240 a year saved on a cell phone bill. After three years, ATT has paid for my lifetime membership. I'm sure there is a catch, like it doesn't cover tax and fees, but just the cell phone "plan", but it will still pay for itself over the years.

Which membership type did your friend have? The regular AAA membership (Basic, Plus or Premier) will not cover a trailer. If your friend added "RV" to his membership, it should have. For the extra $33, it's worth it if one does a considerable amount of traveling. The AAA Plus RV (which is what I have) is a comprehensive program that extends emergency road service and Plus benefits to your RV's, motor homes, pickups with campers, motorcycles, and boats, snowmobile and motorcycle trailers.
AAA covers you for flat tire changing. The AAA service vehicle will go to the vehicle and replace your flat tire with your spare, free of charge to you.
As one who travels via car, motorcycle or sometimes pulling my popup camper with either the motorcycle or car, I like having the insurance of AAA. The cost for the service doesn't seem unreasonable to me, plus AAA offers other benefits as well (ie maps, various discounts, etc). They even just rolled out a new bicycle service! AAA will transport you and your bicycle anywhere within 10 miles at no cost, if your bicycle breaks down (limited to two calls per year).
I've used the AAA service for breakdowns that have happened while I'm in the car or ridding my motorcycle. They've always been professional, arrived promptly and were knowledgeable in how to tie down a motorcycle on a flatbed.

Man, I think I got hosed! I bought a 1 year membership in '12, cost me $30k! But I seem to have gotten better benefits than all of you. They gave me a '12 Ultra Ltd for free!

Not necessarily. Local HOG chapters are not required to charge annual dues, and many don't. It's totally up to the chapter.
