The wife and I both got the full life memberships, after the first five years, for $150.00 each YEARS ago! ........ Seems like FOREVER ago, now that I think about! ...... Ya know, old age ain't gonna be for sissys.
I joined HOG in 1983. I got my Life membership the first time they offered it. It has been as good as free after 20 years. The life was equal to yearly membership after 20 original cost years. I think the annual membership was raised sometime in the late 90's. I don't know. I didn't check after I didn't need to pay any more. If you are going to ride a Harley, and not just testing, it is better to get the life membership. The information and runs are worth the membership.
I always get the free for a yr everytime I buy a new bike but have never seen anything that's worth buying it myself.
If you belong to a local HOG chapter, it's worth it, my fifth year is starting in Jan, so i'll have to look into getting the life membership. I'll have to say that joining my local chapter was probably one of the best thing I did after getting a harley. Besides meeting a great bunch of new friends, there are plenty of rides, Dealer discounts, plus your still free to do your own thing. My wife loves making food for the LOH bake sales and going to the monthly meetings. I will say that it's probably not for everyone, and every chapter is different. If you find a good one it's a fun time for sure.

I would have to agree with the saying: "It's all what you make of it." I'm a life member also and enjoyed some of the benefits every year. Also belong to our local but not that active. Both the national & local a great source of rides and activities with others with the same interest. Sometimes I feel like riding solo and sometimes in a group.
I know those that already spoke and bought it back in the day when things first started or in the first cpl years did very well considering the price now adays.
