Unhappy Apes I need help Please

Never in a million years ever thought I would want Apes on a bike. Been riding all my life and just always thought they looked kinda cool but were just a fashion statement and really had no fuction. But after reading many post about them I am thinking I want some or should I say; I need some. What cought my eye more than anything else was a statment by someone about hands going to sleep on long rides and back hurting, I have always had that problem but never said anything about it because I figured it was a problem with me and not the bikes I had. You know its that man thing.....never wanting to admit your not a stone assed rider that can ride 5000 in one day and smile about it. But anyway, from what I read they do have fuction. So here is the stats; I'm 6'.0" and ride a Street Glide with a stock seat. I like riding with my arms at least 3/4 full streach or more, I also am a 270 pounder so I set far back from the tank. I have no clue at all what I need, I'm thinking either 12" or 14" but not sure. So being I have crawled out of my man shell to you guys and admitted I not a superman like some riders and do have issues. How about helping a brother out with some advice so I only have to spend my hard earned money once on bars....I guess now its thime for the group hug thing....right; well maybe I'm not at that point yet. Thanks guys alot can be learned on this site, and that a good thing.

I'm 5'10" and I have 16"ers. These are totally comfortable for me. Would not have wanted to go any lower. And I'm 53 years old.

I had 16s on my last roadking then bought and ultra and put 13s on it cause of the fairing. If I didn't have a fairing I would run 16s.

After riding with apes I could never go back. I find if I can keep my back straight. It does wonders on a long ride. They also look cool. Iam 6'3 185 I had 16.5 on my last dyna. I have 14's on my road glide. I think the best thing to do is kinda try a few on other bike if possible. I think it also depends on how you sit. You can try measureing how you naturally sit. I know the feeling tho. I swore I would never own a bike with a fairing, windsheild, or a radio. Once the taste of eating my words was gone. I dont think I could live without em.

14's on my Road King Classic. Made the thing as comfortable as a Lazy boy with a thin C&C seat. Now sitting in , not on top of. Its great.

....bout time. What took ya so friggin long?

Mine are 15" Paugchos and they rock as far as looks, comfort & rideability. I'm 6'2" with a 36" reach.

U got several styles of bars on the market as far as manufacturers go....and huge differences in prices. Depends primarily if u want a sharp bends (PYO, RSD) or rounded style (Cyclesmiths) and height. SO do ur homework and check out the search feature found around here.

Once u find ur bars, I recommend Johnny Vaughn at HDbikeparts.com for all of your cables & connections. He's an old timer and really knows his stuff. Several peeps have used him on HDF.

Good Luck....and welcome 2 da jungle!

Thumbs up

I started with 10.5 FXRP mini-apes, sure wish I didn't wait a few years to put the 16"-ers on!! It's like power steering...
