Default Inner Primary

Has anyone ever changed their own inner primary. I just picked up a chrome one and was thinking about doing the job myself. Is it a difficult job?? Require any special tools?? Any heads up would be helpful.

+1 on what timvan stated.......

On the contact points where the inner primary meets up with the engine case / trans you should apply a THIN layer of rtv to the mounting points. Just be sure not to get any in the bolt threads. The rtv will help to keep any primary fluid from working past the bolts and leaking at the machined contact points.

It's not a difficult job if you have a some mechanical know how and tools. Air tools will help the job go a bit faster. There are some "specialty" tools that will be required such as for holding the primary sprockets from turning while removing the hold downs. Best thing you can do is get an official Harley service manual if you don't already have one.

I'd say it's about a 3-4 hour job. Would recommend getting the Fix My Hog DVD on it for a visual. It's on their 'Touring' DVD.

The service manual says get "new" bolts to attach the inner primary to the engine and trans case. I usually feel like they are just trying to sell me something I don't need... Until the first one I torqued snapped off. I forget what they are called, but they are only designed to be torqued once. Do yourself a favor and buy the 5 new overpriced bolts.
