road glide history
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but,
I believe the predecessor to the Road Glide was the Tour Glide (frame mounted fairing/dual headlights) introduced in 1979 with the Shovelhead motor and a 5 speed transmission.
I was looking to buy 1 of these in the mid-80's. It came as a bagger with a tour pack as standard.
The 80 engine was rubber mounted and was called the 'rubber-glide' in some areas.

The very first Road Glide was indeed an Evo. 1998. I sought one out on purpose because of all the problems with the new TC motors. There are no drawbacks to having the Evo, and some plusses.
The 98 if I'm not mistaken was the first roadglide; was an evo, and was availalke with the carb also. I didn't get one at the time because there was nothing in terms of upgrades for the fuel injection module and the next year was the first twin cam, I wanted bugs sorted out first. Had some fuel injection weaknesses. Wouldn't you know it, 2 years later, there was all kinds of stuff to modify them with, and that 98 is a collector. I rode tour glides before, and the new R/G handles much better and is more aerodynamic and stable. The tourglide was a barge by comparison If you look, you can find evo R/G's for sale reasonably. Even if you go with an evo tourglide, Punch the motor out to 88" or 96", and run with woodracings carbs and cams, and you will surprise a few twin cam riders. If you go early, you can punch the shovel out to 93" with an s&s kit which was a perfect touring motor for that bike
