I will take mine to the dealer for the 1k service then every 20k after. I also have the tires replaced at the dealer. It's nice to have the service manual and do the work yourself, get to know your bike that way you might be able to help yourself or someone else on the side of the road some day.

Dealer did my 1000 only because it was included. I've done all the rest myself. Try it you'll like it!

After paying for the 1000 mile service I decided I would do the others and bought myself a manual. Been doing it myself since.

If you have the slightest mechanical ability...do it yourself.

If you don't know a wrench from a sawz-all...let someone else do it.

Harley's are the easiest bikes out there to do your own work on by far.

The key is the tools. Having the right tools on hand is half the battle.

If a job calls for a bike lift or whatever, wait until you have it or you may muck the job up good.

Default 1000 mile

Ok after debating in my mind what to do,& reading all of these vary good posts. I bought a manual for my 2009 road king & read up un the 1000 mile maintance. I think that I will also do my own. The way the the manual shows it the most time that it takes is the 2 hour test drive to see if everything is working. I think that I can do everthing that is required & ride my own bike. Thanks for all the help.

I take mine to the dealer for scheduled maintenance until it is out of warranty. That means the 1K, 5K and 10K on my present bike. I have about 9700 miles on it now, and plan on bringing it in for the 10K and new tires when I start up again in the Spring. I know the warranty does not require it, but I figure it is easier than arguing with the dealer claiming that I or someone else screwed something up. Once the warranty is over, I plan on doing most of the routine stuff myself.
