Lowers?
The previous owner of my Ultra took them off and they did not come with the bike when I bought it. I finally got a set at a good price and have painted them to match my bike. Now that they are on, I doubt I will take them off. I like the wind protection and the extra storage. If it was about 'looks' I wouldn't have bought an Ultra!
I took the hard lowers off and run without them all summer. For me it's just too hot here to have them and IMHO, the bike looks better without them.
When winter gets here and the temps start dropping, I use the pleather lowers.
No scratch, easy on/off, and I can stow them in the side bags for marginal days.

I've been using soft lowers on my Road Glide for 2 winters now. They work great, come off before I head home in the afternoon and keep the water off in the rain. They haven't scratched my crash bars. I love them. I would suggest you stay away from the HD vinyl ones though as the snaps can rip really easily. Go with the HD nylon ones or an after market brand.
"04" Ultra. I run without them. I did not ride that much with them to know how much they might benefit or not. Rode 300K without them and didn't like where I had to place my highway pegs. Most the guys I ride with have them and give me a bit of a hard time for not having mine on. Different strokes for different folks.
Wow, good feedback and I'm torn on my decision. Everything you guys have covered are thoughts I've gone through as well. I love the wind protection in general, hot or cold. The look is subjective. I may put the quick detachable hardware on them and try to come up with something to protect my engine guard from scratches if I put them back on so there won't be marks if/when I take them off. I've always left them on, even in the summer, but I'm kinda liking the look of them off for now. I just had them "freshed up" with new paint too......LOL. I may try the leather ones for ease of use and to see if they function well to protect from buffeting.
I love the look of the lowers on my bike. I've got the older style, non-vented lowers, which I prefer the look of. (I'd like the functionality of the newer style lowers, though). I can't imagine not having them now.
