Doesn't matter if you are a 50 year veteran rider or got your license last week!!!
Local base policies will differ ... for our bases only active duty are required to have safety course (which the AF teaches for free) but all riders on base are required to wear the minimum gear. BTW, if you ride to an Air Force base don't expect the sticker to mean much ... they are not used any more because they found they saved 350k a year by doing away with them.

My experience was similar. I got my M/C endorsement in 1974. The guy at the DMV came outside and had me drive around the block, which was around a small park, while he watched!!

My older brother being one of them. He's been riding off and on for years w/o an endorsement. He rode with us to Sturgis this year and was definitely concerned about getting stopped as he knows some states may impound his bike for riding w/o a Motorcycle Endorsement.

He can't rent bikes w/o an endorsement and now, if he gets caught in TX, he's likely to get his bike impounded (LEO's discretion). He did go a couple years ago to get it and passed the written, but didn't have an appt for the riding part of the test so he was sent packing. Because of his procrastination, he now has to take the MSF to get his license.

Also, a friend was recently at the DMV getting his endorsement and said a LEO came and asked everyone in the line how they got there...those that rode their own got a ticket on the spot! Talk about shooting fish in a barrel!

I recently rode down to Ft Hood for a PGR Mission (after the tragic shooting) and a whole group (over half) of us almost didn't get to ride on base because we didn't have our MSF Completion cards. I was bummed since I'd just ridden down apx 2 1/2 hours to participate. Someone did some fast talking and the guard changed his mind and let us on base. It was an extremely last minute mission so we weren't forewarned about any of this stuff in the email. We DID have to have helmets, long sleeves, gloves, etc....Thankfully I had all that stuff and even had an extra 1/2 helmet which some guy borrowed. Lucky for him it wasn't pink glitter or some other chick design!

We rode on base for about 2 blocks, parked and that was that. The guard yelled at me and another guy to "slow down" as I was driving off...was going about 8 miles UNDER the posted speed limit. Sure glad I don't have to deal with that type of stuff on a regular basis. Not knocking the military, have a ton of respect, but JEEZ!!!!

I've had a MC endorsemnt since I was 18....totally by accident....

I had a regular DL when I was 16 in ohio, when I turned 18 I joined the USAF and got stationed in AZ...I wanted an AZ DL, so when I went to get it, the girl noticed the last 2 digits of my DL # was MC...she asked if that meant motorcycle, I said Um Why yes it does...she gave me the endorsement, so since 1982 I've had a MC endorsement and NEVER taken a single DMV test....LOL

I immediately went out and bought a Kawasaki, rode it for a year, bought a used goldwing for another year, then bought a '74 FLH then an 87 FXDWG then bla bla....
Oh I did build a couple custom triumph choppers in the 80's....

Still proudly never taken the DMV test....

Our base requires all riders to have MSF, mil and Civ....I'm a MC monitor...

Lucky for me, our base also interprets the AFI requiring the bright color shirt/jacket and reflective gear to be covered by the lights/reflectors on my tourpak...so I get to wear my black leather and no vest........

I 've been riding since '76, but just got my "M" on my DL this year. AZ PD is planning to change a rule... If you are caught without the Big "M" on your DL they will enpound your bike. Before you could call a friend with the MCL, but that's about to change. In Phoenix the road test is on a small laid out course.
