I obtained the endorsement in the event of an accident and did not want to jeopardize the insurance coverage. Progressive did ask inquiry about the endorsement when I applied for the coverage. Now in Florida, you have to take the safe riders course before you can sit for the written test and get the endorsement. I think the class is $250.00.
I have had mine for many years. This past September a new law went into effect here in Texas that requires you to pass a state approved Motorcycle Safety Class before you can get the motorcycle endoresment. A lot of people that have been procrastinating may be in for a surprise.

In calif they will cancel your insurance. And they find out, quickly. Don't ask me how i know. I've had mine since I was 16. But sometimes when you re-new here in calif, the DMV clerk screws up and takes it off. I've had to take the test 3 different times.

Not everyone... my 18 year old daughter got her endorsement 1 month after her license... she did it on her 883. Passed on first try. I made it a requirement for both son and daughter... even if they never rode a motorcycle, they had to take the 4 day MSF course and get their endorsement before they could drive the car. I felt it would, at least, make them more aware of what motorcyclists go through.
As far as people being grandfathered and not needing endorsements... I surely hope they've taken ERC's over the years. I've been riding since I was 11 (40 years now), and was stunned at what the ERC gave me. However, since I'm still active duty Navy, it's a new requirement that you must take the BRC initially, an ERC every 2 years, and if you ride a sport bike... they have a special class for you too.

I've had mine since 1975. Back then all we needed was a driver's license. We showed up at the DMV on a Saturday morning, we were told to go down the street, make a right turn then another then another then another. If we made it back, we got the endorcement on the license.
