Help with Hogtunes problem
I've had hogtunes in all 4 speakers in my 05 Ultra Classic since 2005.
I just installed the new speakers with the AMP in the front.
Install went fine, no issues. The problem is that the speakers hiss something fierce.
A constant "white" noise. Doesn't matter if I'm on Aux, CD, FM etc... In fact, even
when I have the speakers off, I hear the white noise. If I just play the rear speakers 5 year old hogtunes there is no hiss. The rear's are not going through the AMP. I then tried to attach one of the older hogtunes I replaced to the front and sure enough hiss like crazy.
So it's not the new speakers, I assume it's due to the AMP.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Joe
Here is a note from crutchfield's website.
It is common, after replacing a factory receiver with a high quality aftermarket receiver, to notice a background hissing sound. The "hiss" is nothing more than the extended frequency response of the new stereo, and not a defect, or wiring problem.
The same holds true when a factory speaker is replaced with a high quality aftermarket speaker. The new speaker has a separate tweeter, which brings out the high frequencies. Any background hiss in the system will now be more noticeable, but should be relatively slight once the source music begins playing.
Of course, if the hiss is pronounced, and not just in the background, there could be a problem with the wiring, or the equipment itself. If the hiss is made louder when the engine is running, this is an indication of an improper ground in the system. Troubleshooting this problem would be the same procedure as for engine noise.
Turned out it was a negative connection to the battery. It had broken and you couldn't tell it, but as soon as you touched it the little eye just fell off and low and behold that was it. Start off with your battery first if you think that your other connections are good in your fairling. Just start tracing wires.
If its when nothing is playing, thats normal for HogTunes. If your hearing hiss OVER your music, then I think you have an issue. What he told me when I called about was, he is aware of the hiss when nothing is playing, but to add the circuitry to the amp to eliminate it would have driven the price of the amp up quite a bit, and since you cant really hear it when something is playing, especially going down the road, he preferred to keep the cost of the amp more affordable.
Then again, my experience is with using the Ultrasound setup to ADD rear speaker pods to a bike that does not have them, so I don't have any inside knowledge of your specific situation.

music but I am listening for it now and I wasn't moving, just with the engine running. I'm sure it's from the AMP since the original speakers (5 year old hogtunes without AMP) didn't do this, nor do the older rear hogtunes still in the bike "hiss". What I was thinking it might be as this has happed on my last car that I put a very nice stereo and amp in was poorly insulated wire. I'll call Pez on Monday or see if he's checking things here.
Thanks all,
Joe

In any case, Pez will take care of you if there is a problem.
