DRILL BABY DRILL? 2010 cat issues....
1 x16 paddle bit will remove all of it. one bit costs $10 at lowes and is good for removing one cat. it dulls the bit pretty quickly. i've done this many times and it works very well.
Did you have to remap computer when you pulled cat material out. Did it make engine cooler? Sound better?
DamifIknow, no I didn't have to remap the computer, I read somewhere in the forum that the computer will adjust automatically. Runs fine and it felt like it was running cooler and yes, it was a big difference in sound, I also cut out the baffles in the mufflers with a dremel. I wasn't going to pay or swap anything for something I can do myself. I gutted quite a few for friends that liked how mine sounded. The cost to tigweld my cat back together was $45.00 since I Don't know how to weld. You can't even tell it's gutted since I did it the hard way at the weld joint so you won't notice it.

no, but i did add some fuel using nightrider products.
Well I removed the cat and its kinda hot while in traffic but cools down quick when move again. Just seat of the pants feeling. No real sound difference I can notice. I just ordered FL- VIED -10 from Nightrider Hope that cools it down a little.

BINGO!
If you dont want to mod the original stock head pipe you could do what many guys do which is buy a set of " De-Catted " head pipes from the classifieds here in hdforums or ebay.

" its kinda hot while in traffic but cools "
I installed the adjustable Vieds on my bike,@ 25% setting really didnt feel any diff in engine temp or heat hitting me from the motor though it may have been a few deg cooler i couln'd tell for sure & made no diff/reduction in oil temp or the way the motor ran or felt at 255 too.
But when i adj the Vied's to 50% setting it idled a bit better/smoother,the slight surge it had when at steady cruise @ light throttle position due to lean lean fuel calibration/ Emission Reg's went away & motor sounded stronger too which was all good.
But I still didn't feel any reduction in heat coming for the motor and didn't see any reduction in oil temp either @ the 50% VIED setting which is where i left it because it runs well there & mpg is till good too.
But i did do something that reduced oil temp 50deg F in summer heat which was installing an Ultracool oil cooler with "twin therm controlled cooling fans " along with Wards cooling fans both @ the same time.
Those 2 cooling system mods collectively working together as a team reduced oil temp a whopping " 50deg f " which btw also significantly reduced engine temp @ the same time too.
But just how much engine temp is reduced when oil temp is reduced 50deg f i dont know because i dont have a way to monitor engine temp but do have a stock type OEM HD oil temp gauge.
Installing both those 2 cooling mods @ the same time was the best money & time i have spent vs improvement in engine perf & riding comfort on my HD thus far that were better then when i went from the stock seat to a nice cushy Mustang regal touring seat and when i went from Crappy stock dunlops to Mich C2's too which say alot .
I say that because i got multiple benefits right off the bat when cooling the oil 50deg f in summer heat on my hd that resulted in mult improvements in engine perf & overall rider comfort right off the bat all at the same time.
So if you want to reduce heat coming from your engine & exhaust in traffic install the 2 cooling mods i did to get the same benefits i did that all air cooled HD's can benefit from, the benefits my HD got post reducing oil temp 50deg f in summer heat are as follows:
* OIL PRESSURE IN SUMMER HEAT IMPROVED FROM 8PSI @ IDLE & 32-35PSI @ CRUISE ON HOT DAYS (WITHOUT COOLING MODS) TO NOW 18PSI @ IDLE & 45-48PSI @ CRUISE IN SUMMER HEAT (WITH THE 2 COOLING MODS.)
* VALVE TRAIN / LIFTERS REMAIN QUIET IN SUMMER HEAT . THATS BECAUSE OIL ISNT THINNED AS MUCH WITH OIL NOW 50 DEG F COOLER ALONG WITH THE MOTOR MAINTAINING APPROX 10-12PSI HIGHER OIL PRESSURE @ IDLE & CRUISE IN SUMMER HEAT TOO COLLECTIVELY TOGETHER BETTER CONTROLLING LIFTERS DUE TO THE HIGHER OIL PRESSURE & LESS THINNING OF THE OIL RETAINING BETTER/HIGHER VISCOSITY COLLECTIVELY ALLOWING LESS BLEED DOWN OF LIFTERS KEEPING THE LIFTERS PUMPED UP BETTER REDUCING VALVE TRAIN & OR LIFTER NOISE IN THE PROCESS.
* MOTOR STOPPED DETONATING ON HD'S REC 91 OCTANE FUEL FOR THE STOCK 9.2 COMPRESSION 96" MOTOR IN MY 09 FLHTCU.
* OIL & MOTOR RUNNING 50 DEG F COOLER MEAN LESS HEAT IS BEING GIVEN OFF MOTOR TO RIDERS FOR IMPROVED RIDER COMFORT ESP IN SUMMER HEAT.
* MOTOR HOT STARTS FASTER/EASIER IN SUMMER HEAT LIKE FOR EXAMPLE AFTER FUELING UP BECAUSE MOTOR/STARTER/BATTERY ARENT AS HEAT SOAKED.
* MOTOR NOW RETAINS CONSIDERABLY MORE OF ITS POWER/TRQ IN SUMMER HEAT THAT IT USED TO LOOSE WITHOUT ADDITIONAL COOLING BECAUSE THE MOTOR/OIL/INTAKE/FUEL ARENT AS HEAT SOAKED ANYMORE.
* ALL THE ABOVE ARE ALL TRUE FACTS/IMPROVEMENTS I GOT POST REDCUING OIL TEMP 50DEG F I SUMMER HEAT AND CANT SAY FOR SURE THE FOLLOWING IS THE CASE OR NOT BUT WOULD THINK GETTING THE OIL RUNNING 50DEG COOLER IN SUMMER HEAT ALSO MAKING MOTOR RUN A BIT COOLER COULD POSSIBLY EXTEND THE SRV'C LIFE OF THE:
( BATTERY/STARTER/GASKETS & SEALS IN THE MOTOR / RUBBING BLOCKS USED ON CAM & PRIM CHAIN TENSIONERS DUE TO ALL THOSE COMPONENTS NOT BEING EXPOSED TO AS MUCH EXTREME HEAT ANYMORE HOUR AFTER HR & MILE AFTER MILE,ETC.)
If you guys think all that's not enough reason to install the 2 cooling mods i did on your air cooled Twin cam V-Twin HD motors then all i can say is have fun in summer heat (esp in traffic) on your HD's with oil pressure in the toilet due to overheated oil & motor with valves & or lifters making more noise then normal with heat from motor roasting you off the bike with it maybe detonating when getting back up to cruise speed too again & i find it hard to believe that more then a few guys here in hdfroums think their air cooled HD's can't can benefit from additional cooling because ther bikes havent gone belly up in summer heat when in fact air cooled HD's respond very well to additional cooling, end of story.
One more thing,i dont rec oil coolers without therm cont elec cooling fans for motorcycles & here's why.
When an oil cooler is needed most like for example when sitting still in traffic or when @ stoplights or slow moving traffic thats where an oil coolers needed most & without elec cooling fans is " basically useless " in that situation due to " lack of airflow thru the oil cooler " sitting still in traffic or at stoplights or in slow moving traffic too.
Thats where an oil cooler with elec cooling fans like i have moves a lot of cooler air thru the oil cooler for continuous cooling of the oil & motor which sitting still or moving slowly along with working in tandem with Wards Twin Cooling fans targeting cooling the heads/spark plugs/upper portion of cyls are a great kick butt cooling team for an air cooled HD.
Happy Motoring!
Scott
