Hammer and blunt object worked for me. Put something on the tank do you don't scratch it. I've had mine off several times.

ALSO, be careful pulling it from the tank. There is a little ground wire on the assembly, I broke mine and had to buy a new one. Also, there is a large rubber o-ring that seals around the ring assembly (dont have manual handy sorry), buy a new one and swap it in when you put in the filter. Not sure why it doesn't come in the filter kit. It was large and orange. One of them "while you're in there" kinda things. (I was working on a 2012)

doubt you could do by hand.

yea, I picked up the steering head bearing tool off Ebay for 20ish, was worth it, used it a few times.
