How to remove battery
you can find the ideal tool that works great at autozone. go to the end of the counter where they check batteries and alternators. see what they use for lifting batteries. it's a chrome steel F- shaped frame with two rubber gripping pads that are thin enough to slide between the battery and the pocket it sits in. it has a vinyl red plastic handle and squeezes the pads together to grip the sides of your battery. get this, they're like 7 or 8 bucks. i have two of them and they work for car batteries, bike batteries, etc. i think they're made by OTC tools. it's the easiest, quickest, and safest way i've found for getting batteries out and in to the tight compartment for the batteries in a harley touring. i know that advance auto parts also uses the same tool, so if they don't have it in stock, they can have it for you in a day or two.
The guy who suggested turning the bike upside down, don't laugh but that thought did cross my mind.
I took a piece of leather and punched two holes in it.
remove the terminal bolts and then put the leather on each side of the terminals, screw bolts back in and viola. Pulled it right out. Getting the cover off is not easy either.

+1 Here.
Online, Advance lists 2 of them - seems like one was $8 and the other $15. Pads are slim and handles adjustable to fit different batteries. Single handle over the top makes it easy to carry the battery.
Several ways out there to get it out, but this tool is what they use at battery stores...
