Default Rear Drive Belt

Two Questions:

1. I know it's been asked before. Dealer wants $550 labor to change rear drive belt. I have the workshop manual. How difficult is it. I am pretty handy around cars. Totally restored the mustang in my sig.

2. 50 buck diff. between the Drag Spec. belt and the H.D. belt. Any comments on that.

Thanks in advance. Mike

IMO,stay with the HD belt. If you got the tools & HD Manual go for it.

I changed a drive belt on my brothers 03 Road Glide with the aid of a HD service manual and it was a piece of cake as long as you have some large sockets for clutch and compensating sprocket. Primary drive locking tool would be helpful also. Buy online for 15 bucks. Dealers want 50. Need some muscle for torquing compensating sprocket or you will be removing primary cover again. Found out the hard way. Dependig on year, consider new swingarm bushings to. Good luck!!

I would check the price at another dealer too. That labor looks really high. I got a rock in my drive belt last summer on a trip to Alaska. Made it all the way back to Virginia with the belt after I dug the rock out! My dealer here charged me $234 for labor and $270 for parts to replace it (Total costs $504). That was in September 2010. Two weeks ago I was riding on an interstate and my new drive belt just up and broke. Had HOG towing take me back to the same dealer (about 30 miles from where I broke down). My dealer looked at the belt and said it should not have broken. No questions asked, they said they would replace it again at no charge!!! That was great service and saved me another $500!! In this case I am glad I had my dealer do the original replacement, although I would not expect a new belt to break that soon. I had 49,000 miles on the original belt with the rock!

It's not to bad of a job to do. It is a little time consuming. Took me half a day taking my time. Replace all your seals while you are there if there is any weeping. Cost me $150 for all the parts. It's a 4 beer and a few cuss words job.

It's an 07 flhp with 41,000 miles. The teeth are breaking off from the front side to the rear.

Also, while you are in there, you might as well change to the SE Compensator... No more work is involved.
