Default Drive belt to lose.

I use to keep my belt at the spec. that is in the manual 3/8 to 7/16 deflection at 10lbs. but after awhile my primary seal started to leak to much tension on the seal from the belt so I have been running the belt at 5/8 to ¾ deflection. Can the belt be to lose and break or get damage?

If you can twist your belt to a 45deg angle your there! If you can't your to tight and if you can twist pass that point it's to lose.

Right now I have it a ¾ and just got back from Colorado about 2000 miles and I would check it when the bike was hot and It seem ok to me not steel cable tight but have a little play maybe about ¼ deflection.

I seriously doubt that a "to spec" belt adjustment lead to a leaking primary seal. My bike's 12 years old ( 93,000 miles,) and no seal has ever been replaced even though I run the belt slightly tighter than that, more like 3/8" and no more.

(And the belt's original too.)

Never run a belt even a "little" too loose.

a little loose probably wont hurt anything, if its too loose it can jump a tooth on the sprocket on hard accelleration.....I have always been one to believe that it is easier to replace a belt than it is to replace a bearing...

The bearing was ok but I replaced it anyway. I was just worry that it might snap or something if it did jump a tooth then I will make it tighter.

This is just my opinion but I do not really think tension on the belt when set to the tolerance will cause a inner primary seal to leak even if you doubled the tension. The small shavings in the primary probably got the seal. I been in two now and they are full of slivers of steel.
