worth turning police road king into ultra?
Hey all, looking for some advice, was wondering about upgrading to an Ultra or road glide ultra from my police roadking? is it worth up grading such as, buying a hoppe, woody or dragonfly fairing, lowers, tour pak, seat, for the roadking or just buy the ultra?..some pros and cons on both I guess. Mine is an 2010, has 103, rush pipes and 12" wild one chubbs. I want the radio now, more wind protection, lowers and all that the ultra has to offer. I think it's going to cost more to upgrade mine...I also think the ultra and road glide have a smoother ride...but maye not...trying to figure this one out...thoughts???
Thanks,

You might be money ahead to just sell the RK and buy an Ultra. Or even trade it in on an Ultra. The only way to know is to price out all the parts, wires, brackets, tour packs, bags, etc. It's going to get real pricey. There are a lot of parts and wiring on an Ultra that are not on a Road King.
I put an a leather quick detach tour pack on my old RK and it cost me over 1K. That was just the tour pack and hardware. Drove for a few years and then like you wanted an Electra Glide. So I sold it (market was better then) and bought an Electra Glide Classic this year.
- I finished stage II on the motor a few weeks ago.
- Halfway through LED upgrades on all the lights with Triple Play mod in rear.
- Wind deflectors ordered (ajustable)
- Detachable lowers next.
- Need better seat for me and the Mrs. Tallboy hurts both our butts.
- Amp and better speakers next
Whew!!! Does it ever end?

I scrapped bought lots of used equipment.
Even purchased some salvage stuff, here is what your going to have to buy from the dealer.
Ultra wiring harness $800
fairing harness $150
cruise control $450
you'll need the following items, I might leave a thing or two out,but here goes
Outer fairing
Inner faring
gauges
brackets
windshield
ignition
gas tank
switches
wiring for switches (buy new)
handle bar
control switches, i.e. cruise, assy,
switch cover
seat
headlight assy for fairing
screws
Radio, speakers, grills
power anntenna
biketronics bt1000 radio conversion
You might purchase the whole Biketronics kit, it's cheaper.
It took me over a year to find all the parts at the right price,
I looked at used vs. new, and the quality.
After the project was done, I purchased a tourpack have almost $1000 in it with paint.
I have over $4500 in my project. so you need to ask yourself this question, is it worth the hassle over the winter to do this project, it takes lots of time and work.
How much did you pay for the Roadking, and how much will a 2010 ultra cost you?
You need to look at your total cost for all the parts, paint, time, labor, so see if it's worth it.
I love my bike, it's a 2002 and don't want to trade it for the world!

in 07 i added it up just for aftermarket fairing lowers and paint (for lowers and fairing) it was about the same cost to trade for the ultra, plus i got the other stuff i swore i would never use,now dont ever want to go without.+ some states only charge taxes on the out of pocket $ so at that time i did the same trading as i woulda sellin it on my own.

get a fairing like the memphis shades ( i saw one, thought it looked pretty good).
on the road, use your ipod and earbuds.
get a tourpak is you really need one.
that's what I'd do, the budget solution.
every penny saved on the current bike gets you that much closer to the next- and multiple bikes is nice.

I'm in the same boat, trying to make the same decision. Not an easy one, because to get into an EGC, or Ultra will cost me a little more than what I'd end up putting into my '05 RKP. Local dealer sort of broke it down for me on the weekend. As my bike sits, he can give me a fair trade, or I could get a fair dollar selling it privately. Any more money into it over what I have now will be wasted unless I keep it for another couple years to enjoy that cost, but still get the same trade in/market value.
IMO, adding parts to one bike to create another will never result in satisfaction. That being said, I wish they'd build a Road King Ultra. I'd like to have the touring trunk, could add it, might be hassle in itself because of the way the Police bags open, but I don't like the "closed in" feeling of the faired bikes. The Road Glide appeals to me more because the fairing is further away feeling less boxed...
