Think about what the setup looks like when you remove the GPS unit. If it leaves a big hunk of hardware on the bike it will look lik crap. A good clamp mount will be functional, secure and come off easily when you don't use the GPS.
this is what I have on mine, clamps around the bar and has a waterproof case to hold your gps unit, my tom tom fits in it great, this is the 4th year I've had it with no problems and never got the gps wet also under $20..
That case looks great. Is it secure? does it shift on the handlebars? Is the plastic front still clear and is it easy to use the touchscreen. This may be one of the best inventions. Thanks.

i had a fairing mount on my SG and removed it after it cracked from the vibration. i use a handlebar mount now. i really liked the positioning of the fairing mount and looked better but the vibration at idle was terrible.
It does not happen often, but I must have lucked out, because I have a fairing mounted RT Zumo 660 and have had no issues. Vibration for me was the opposite of your experience, I got more from the handlebars than from the fairing mount. When using the fairing mount it does not block any gauge from view.
I used a RAM mount to mount to the LH handlebar. Works great except you cannot read the thing during the day due to the glare. Tried the hood and other remedies, nothing blocks the glare...

Mine didn't crack but the vibration sucks. Stick with a Ram Mount for the bars. Mine was perfect. I do like the look with the fairing mount better but it vibrates. Check out www.mountguys.com
