Default twin cam 96 cam tensioner life and inspection

First of all thanks for all the help recently, I have got help finding an intermittent stalling problem, trueing brake rotors, cleaning of crucial grounds and wiring connections, tuning, and many other items from everyone. I know that the 2007 and later 96" motors have better cam tensioners but I dont find any info on cam tensioner life or inspection intervals for this motor. When do you inspect and or replace these on a 96", any input appreciated, thanks JL

The tensioners was a TC88 problem and doesn't apply to your bike, as you have a later spec. Relax and ride! If you are interested in servicing your own bike check your owner's handbook, or for more details get a factory service manual.

The shoe material changed sometime in 2008 and the new material has shown longer life.

Even though I had a 2008 built late summer, it had the "old" material and was showing signs of wear after 20,000 miles.

Yours is most likely the old material and may be worth checking/changing before much longer.

Good luck!

I was just talking to a friend about this yesterday who owns an indy shop. He recommended I inspect wear blocks every 25K. He mentioned they worked on a newer 96 inch bike that had completely worn through the wear block. I don't recall how many miles he said that bike had, but it was well beyond 25K.

Mine is a 07 with 70000 miles on it.. i opened it at 52000 miles and the pad material was at least 90% good...i won't worry until 150000 miles or until i do more work to the motor....

I have had the cam chest apart on twenty or more late model(07 and newer) twin cams for cam changes, oil pump problems, etc. Mileages ranging from 5,000 to as much as 62,000 and have yet to find a tensioner pad in the critical range. The heaviest ware is usually on bikes with excessive crank run-out. Not saying it can"t happen, but in my experience the probability is very low.

Dont worry about it till 100,000 miles and by then you will probably be doing cams anyways. Mine were 40% worn at 100,000 with .004 runout and drivin hard. You will be fine.

Thanks for all the input, can you inspect with the cover off and see both shoes? I have done this procedure on a tc 88, can you see both shoes on a 96?

Where is it a Harley Literature to replace wear blocks? I have not see n it written anywhere! Not a peep about inspections either. Is this so sort of secret kept by the motor co? Why is it not published?
