Cam Install without Bearing Tools?
I am installing cams in my 09 Street Glide and have read the service manual and the instructions that came with the cams but am not completely sure if I need to install new bearings and pull the old? I want to make sure I have everything that I need when I go to start the project next weekend so just need to be sure if I need to order bearings and tools now. Thanks for the help.
I'm just completing the same job on mine. I've got to adjust the valves yet. If you're going into it I would certainly change to the B-168 bearings. They're a much better bearing. They have a full complement of rollers instead of the gaged type. Get the Gary Beatty tool. Works great.

fast shipping and excellent quality and won't find a better price. I ordered the remover and installer and it was on my door step in a couple of days. No offense to the Beatty set up, but this one is identical to my buddies factory harley install/removal tools. I was not comfortable tapping in the bearings but that is just my opinion.

I used these same tools...Both the remover and installer worked great.
It almost took longer to open the box they were in than to remove and install the bearings.
I had thought about not replacing the bearings...But being I was in there anyway, why not do it just to be safe.
Change them while you're in there and post up a "wanted to buy" thread for some bearing puller/install tools. Every now and then guys will sell their tools after they've used them. I bought my tools off another forum member, used them, and then sold them to another member. He used them and I don't know where they went from there but you might be able to find a set that way. Fun job! Enjoy it!

I've only done one set of cams. I've never bought a special tool for anything unless there was absolutely no other way, including the inner cam bearings.
I removed my inner bearings with a tool I fashioned from a 3/8" bolt and a slide hammer. Worked perfectly. Cost = Free!
But if I were replacing cam bearings regularly, I'd buy a tool.
