Default Changing the Shift Rod Linkage

I'm going to be changing out the stock linkage for the Hemi type suggested by another several other people. Can someone tell me the correct procedure for doing this. How far is the rod threaded on each end? What is the best way to remove the stock hardware? Thanks.

It's not a Hemi type, it's a Heim joint. The old ones just unthread, and the new ones just thread on. There are kits on ebay, such as this one... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Heim-Joint-R...23fe66&vxp=mtr

I always adjust the new one, prior to installing, with the old one (for length).

I didn't see that you already bought them , but I would suggest these.
https://www.midwestcontrol.com/part.php?id=301
The STF-5 is a stainless steel heim with a teflon bearing female thread right hand design.
The reason I say this is that these look good and last a really long time with zero maintenance.
I bought 4 last time and did a buddies bike as well , he couldn't believe the difference.
If you get 2 5/16 24 rh x 1 1/4 stainless bolts and stainless nylock nuts , you're done.
Measure the stock linkage center to center at the rod end holes.
I usually just back the nuts off as far as they go and install the rod ends as far as they go.
See how the length compares to the stock linkage.
If you end up a bit long , just move your shifter on it's shaft 1 tooth in the direction to correct.
The final length isn't really that critical , the shifter height is.
I tried another brand , and they loosened in 10,000 miles so I went back to these.
Pitch the idea to a few harley friends , as the more you order the cheaper they get.
Very good inexpensive first mod on any touring Harley.
Here's a pic of this setup on my last bike.

While you're at it , drill and tap the primary for a grease fitting 1/4x28 and you'll have a really slick shifter when you're done.
You can see it in the picture pointing forward.

Those are great ideas using new heim joints. I wanted however to dress mine up so i spent the $$ and bought a harley shifter linkage. It cost about $115.00.
