Default How do I zero out my trip odometer ?

Hi guys n gals,

I'm new here to HD forum, I have been riding for many years, but just got my first Harley, 93 Electra Glide Classic, and so far i must say I love it, it rides as good or better than an old goldwing I had years ago.

Anyway, my question is, how do i zero out my trip odometer? I got a cheapo manual with the bike that doesnt say a word about it. I am guessing it is the silver **** above and to the left of the speedo, it will push in slightly, and pull out slightly, and it will turn about a 1/16th of a turn while pushed in or pulled out before it feels like if i turn any harder i will break it off... so I stopped.

I'm not a trip odometer fanatic, but its fun to see how many miles you logged once in a while just out bombin around.

JR

Sorry, I can't help you with your question but I'm sure others will be.
Just a quick hello and welcome to the forum from a sunny England.

Should be able to just turn it and ratchet back to zero. If it doesn't turn, could be bound up, in which case you could remove the housing and check it out. If it doesn't work with the housing off, could be bound up internally, don't think you can fix that without buying a new head unit ....

My '99 was pre-electronic and I just turned it without pushing or pulling it in.

Sounds like you may have a faulty speedo. On my 92 Fatboy it was a matter of turning the ****. I think you pressed it in while turning but I'm not 100% sure - it's been a while. Maybe squirt some WD40 in first and let it sit for a few minutes? The **** comes off with a smallish (#0?) phillips head screwdriver. I suggest pulling the **** and injecting WD40. You could go one step further and pullthe console (easily done too) to be sure ou have full access to the speedo.

I was thinking on the same line, that the silver **** should turn, as the odomoter and trip are the old analog rotating drum that have been on cars and bikes for a hundred years. the speedo, and odometers work ok, it just wont zero. I guess my next chore is pull the front of the fairing off and see what the silver **** drives and if it can be free'd up with WD or some such equivilant.

Thanks for all the input !!

The more I think about it the more I think that the 92 Fatboy **** rotated anti clockwise to reset the odometer and didn't rotate clockwise at all.

I guess the next question is, was the **** on the Fatboy right on the side of the speedo? On my glide the speedo is in the fairing dash, and it has a separate silver **** next to it mounted in the dash
