Zen lifetime starter clutch is junk.
I purchased a MES 1.4 kw starter in March of 2012. I wasn't able to ride until spring and on labor day weekend the clutch crapped out. I replaced the starter drive yesterday and contacted MES about the clutch. I purchased the starter from Rare Electrical for $159 and they won't warranty parts of the starter, just the starter itself for 1 year. It was either fix the starter or be left walking so I replaced the starter drive which voided the warranty from Rare Electrical. With the old part in hand and doing some investigating I determined that the drive that failed was the Zen starter drive with a lifetime warranty. I called MES about the issue and they stated that if I had bought the starter from Custom Chrome with part # 2110-0319 for $348.95 then they would warranty the clutch. Being that I bought it from an internet dealer they won't honor the clutch warranty. Same starter, same clutch, which they admitted to, but tough sh#t. The zen lifetime clutch lasted 5 months in my 107.

sounds like its a lot like the lifetime parts you buy from autozone. doesn't mean its gonna last, just that they'll replace the part if/when it craps out. of course labor is on you.
in your case, if you paid the extra $190, you would have got the warranty to go along with it. you opted to buy the non-warranty version.... not saying it's right, but that looks like what happened.

dawg has in the past posted the toyota part number for a $35 starter clutch that'll work with the stock starter.
QC with aftermarket starters is poor and I continue to have good results with stock starters in each of my Harleys ( with the exception of the '53)- the 88 I have rebuilt a few times the 95 is still crankin' and the 09 is fine.
