Default How many miles are too many on a 80 ci.?

Hi, I'm looking at a 1993 ultra classic this weekend with 40k on it. It sounds good and is the 80 cubic engine. I was wondering how many miles are these guys good for, and is this the evo engine? Thanks.

Yes that is an Evo.

You might try asking that question in the Evo section of the forum.

The touring section here seems to deal with mostly late model bikes.

And welcome to the forum.

Yes, it's the EVO motor. 40K wouldn't scare me at all on a well cared for, well maintained bike. I would think it should be good for double or triple that mileage. Jump on it if the dollars are right.

.... depends on how many times it's been rebuilt.

I sold my '95 at 82k, the present owner is happy and riding.

my '88 has about 76k on it.

change the oil and be nice to it, they keep going.

the quality of the metals, casting/forgings and machining far, far exceeds that of the earlier bikes from H-D and other manufacturers

I put 84,000+ on my EVO: in many ways I wish I still had it as that motor has many advantages over the twin-cams! I rebuilt it at 50,000 miles, which is apparently a standard mileage - I'm told my current 103 will be up for an overhaul at 50,000 miles.

As mentioned before, it goes back to how the engine was treated by the previous owner(s). If the fluids were changed regularly and the miles are highway miles, I would not be afraid of the EVO.

A buddy just sold his '85 EVO after going through the debate I did over how long to run it: like me it came down to the number of miles he rode each year and the increasing difficulty of quickly obtaining parts. His odometer was broken, so don't know how many miles were on that bike.

I know of EVO's running strong with 130,000 on them - all well cared for machines.

I wouldn't be scared of the miles but I would look it over closely and ask about service records or at least get a feel for whether it was taken care of or not.
IF the price was right would also be a major part o my decision on a bike that old.

I would think under 5k$

heres a couple 95's for sale.

Yes it's an Evo and fine for a great many more miles than that. When it needs fixing HDF can help!

Welcome to HDF from the UK, from a fellow Evo owner.

...
+1 on this. "Miles" - IMO - are not as important as how well (or not!) the bike was maintained.

Any way to obtain verifiable Service Records, etc.?

When it's burning oil pretty good and the upkeep cost is prohibitive then It's time to do something about it. Until then, ride that F!@#er
