Yes. It's setting the springs right. While sitting on the bike the shocks should sag one third of their total travel.

 

yes, it is, if you go on howards site there are some documents about initial setup, read them then read them three more times! you want the sag to be 1/3 of the stroke of the shock, if I remember correctly its 31 mm, but my notes are at home.


Once the shocks are broken in, you will need to recheck the sag setting, then you can start fooling with the sweep valve if you get the B version

 

However the stroke of the shock depends on the length of the shock.

That ain't necessarily so! I can't speak for JSI shocks, but the Ohlins that Howard sells come in a variety of specifications, some versions with much longer stroke than others of the same overall length. Complicated things, custom-built shocks!

 

Just went the JRI B route with Howard. Read the stuff I was supposed to and asked a few questions, look forward o working with him on the replacement of the air shocks (which we ran for a year first (ok, 8K) so we knew what we wanted to shoot for. Simple no bullshit conversation and I will call him when I get them and am ready to install. I have the same weather here looking at 15.1 on the gauge right now so no rush but I look forward to tuning in a better ride in March/April

Hope so ,ordered them today and should be here in about two weeks, then just waiting for better weather to get set up and ride. Tomorrow high is around 2 above.

 

It only took me about an hour to install and set the sag on my JRI 13" B's. I think I heard Howard mention somewhere on here that the preload is not set on these shocks prior to shipping. Perhaps I was just lucky but the preload on my shocks was just about perfect right out of the box. All three Sag measurements were within the perameters in the set-up instructions.

 

GRBrown, i can imagine both you and your wife trying to check the sag while sitting on the bike. if i had a wife and mentioned anything about sag, she'd likely slap me silly. i also have to do something about shocks. the rear stock ones suck on my '13 roadglide ultra. not as bad as the stock shocks as were on my '08 streetglide though. ohlins, jri's, progressive's. i have to study before making the plunge, and hopefully in the end, i'll make the right choice.
