Default Primary Fluid Capacity: HD Service Manual Calls for 45oz. Is this Correct?

Replacing frictions & steels on my 2011 103" Street Glide.

According to the HD service manual, the primary chaincase refill capacity calls for:

38 oz. wet
45 oz. dry

Does this seem like an excessive amount for a primary fill? My 2007 96" Softail only takes 1qt. (32oz) for a drain & fill.

What exactly constitutes a 'wet' fill (38oz) vs. a 'dry' fill (45oz), anyway?

Thanks

Dry is a brand new bike being filled for the 1st time. Wet is how we all would see our bikes. Every scheduled maintenance it's 35-38oz

If the clutch was replaced consider it dry since the clutch will be holding no fluid. If you're just changing fluid consider it wet 38oz. Although most shops just put in a quart when refilling. Just try not to overfill. Makes finding neutral harder.

Softail and touring bike take different quantity. The manual is correct. Use dry fill after pulling the primary cover. Wet when draining primary through drain plug.

you soak the friction plates, right?
I soak for hours

put it together, add the 38 oz...

then be prepared to add more fluid.

probably until you are at the full 45 oz ( incl. the fluid sucked up by the plates)

most models call for the primary to be filled until the fluis can be seen at the bottom of the clutch basket...bike upright...fluid warm.

so after the job, ride it to warm it, then check level again

Just drain it and put a quart in it.

Follow MKs directions and you will be fine. Just adding fluid and walking away might work if you don't give a damn, but I suspect you do.

Don't simply put a set quantity in! Every hole has a level to be filled up to. Use the quantities you mentioned as a guide to what you need on hand before you start. You may have a little left over, or put in a little more than the 'wet fill'.

Where's that very helpful diagram that shows the exact location fluid should be on the clutch basket?
