Fwiw, I'm perfectly happy with mu 04. True, later ones have more power and an extra gear. All in all, so what. Mine moves more than fast enough for me, and purrs along just fine at 80+.

There are thing I like about the newer models, but not enough to justify the price.

That said, I would not be afraid to go anywhere on my '04 E Glide. If you find a bike that has been well maintained you will be able to ride an older bike with confidence. Heck, listen to the people complain about the problems they are having with there new scoots. I can do a lot of things to my bike and not have anything invested like I would with a new one. Good luck on your search. You never know you might just luck up on one close by. I found mine via the internet and bought it just down the road from you in Deckerd, TN. Just my 2 cents worth and your mileage may vary. Happy trails....

Nothing wrong with the older bikes....Got mine with 36000 on it now it's turning over 58000 in 3 years. I've done some work to it, but that's half the fun.......been on cross country trips without a thought...Just take off and go......

I just bought my 2000 ultra for less than your budget, only had 23,000 miles and garage kept. The only thing is the cam chain tensioner and that is an easy fix if you are so inclined

I agree with the post above that said a lot of the new bikes have there share of troubles, heck any brand or year can have problems. I have heard that 2000- 2002 had the best bottom end.

I bought my 2001 EG classic with a bunch of miles on it, and it has 100k on it now. I rode it 2000 miles to Texas and back the last 3 years, and will do it again next year. If your budget allows, buy an 02 or newer bagger and ride it like you stole it. I do. The reason I recommend 02 or newer is they started Delphi fuel injection then. If you don't mind a carbureted bike, a late 90s or early 2000s bike with a twin cam will serve you well if you maintain it. Don't let all these sissies tell you you need a brand new bike with extended warranty to leave town.
