Im pulling the primary this weekend is there something specific I could check to see if the compensator is bad?

Kitehog, do ya mind if I piggyback on yer thread? I was gonna post one of my own, but my problem is very similar. I'll add what I've done, and what my observations are.

Mine very rarely has a problem when cold, but over 50% of the time will when hot, and starting in neutral. I've learned to start in gear when hot, and only occasionally do I have a problem. However, when I do have a problem, and it finally starts, it smells rich. Also, when I'm having the grinding problem, and she finally grabs, I can hear it pause at TDC on compression stroke, right before it fires up. Mine is an '07 EGlide with stock 96", with a V&H FuelPack. I did read in the maintenance log that it's had a Stage 1 tune, done with the Screamin Eagle Race Tuner. I bought my bike in May with just over 41,000 on the clock, and it started this within a few days. It now has 49,800 on it, and it hasn't fixed itself.

I added a ground made of 8 gauge wire from the top starter bolt to ground point. Didn't really seem to help much.

Try starting in gear when hot, see if that helps. If so, it might help give us an indication of what the problem is.

the initial noise problem when starting sounds like a starter clutch. u replaced the starter and things were good and then started going south. The real problem could be ur charging system (stator/reg).

I am thinking it is your starter clutch...The grinding sound comes from your starter clutch slipping.

Another thing I forgot to mention! I replaced the Voltage Regulator and tested the Stator output everything on the charging side is in spec.

I just want to add a thank you to all who have replied with their thoughts, I really appreciate it. I don't want to take it to my local shop as I do not trust them at all and my local Indy is really good with the older bikes just not sure about the newer models.

I am concerned the original will crank it over but makes some noise while the replacement will not crank it over. Is it possible the replacement starter does not have enough uumph to crank a hot motor? Ther are several hight torque starters out there around 1.4kw. What is the spec on the replacement you used?

Also, does the 09 have high comp pistons and compression releases? I think all 103 and 110 motors have auto compression releases. Does this apply to this application?

Thanks for the input, the All ***** Starter is a 1.4KW high torque starter.

'10 RK Same problem, I replaced the comp and the drive units to no avail. Ended up being the battery! Starting in gear put a a little drag on the system and would keep the grinding noise from happening. Funny thing is the battery has enough in it to start my emergency generator and that was a year ago and the batt still works.
