How many qts. of engine oil?
Just did the 1000 mile fluid change on my new 2014 and used my old 2013 service manual since the engine is essentially the same except for the new larger cams. So the manual states 4 qts of engine oil but to input only 3.5 qts. and check oil when engine is warmed up.
So I filled the holes with Amsoil Synthetic and only input 3.5 qts into the engine, then rode the 5 miles from warehouse to home to warm up the engine. Upon arrival home I checked my oil and the 3.5 qts showed FULL on the dipstick.
I remember the 2013 I did my own service work as well and changed the oils but put in all 4 qts. then took it to my dealership for their inspection to get things tightend up and checked for my ride to Sturgis (peace of mind). Anyway they told me the engine oil was to high and they had to drain some.
So the 4 qts is to much and the 3.5 qts seems to be just right, my question is how much oil SHOULD be in the engine? If only 3.5 qts then why would the MOCO put 4 qts in the service manual?

the manual says something like : put in X amount, then check again with the dipstick cold and hot.
some 2014 models do NOT have the oil cooler- so less oil capacity.
and that change is noted in the 2014 manual vs 2013
all 3 holes spec a nominal capacity, but check with visual indicators

There is a difference between "capacity" and refill quantity. A "dry" engine may take 4 quarts, but if you can only drain 3 quarts, installing 4 quarts is an obvious over filling. A more familiar example would be the gas tank. The book says it is 6 gallons, how often do you try to "force" 6 gallons into it in one fuel stop?
