Is there an easy mod to fit a wider tire under the back? How wide can you go with everything being stock?
If you have the stock 1 1/2" wide belt the widest you can confidently get in is an MU, which is 140/85. Even then you will probably need to trim the rubber curtain on the belt guard, to get clearance where the tyre comes closest to the belt. Some members have reported getting in a 150/80, but when I tried there wasn't enough room on my bike.
The stock wheel will take up to 150 max, the fender will as well. A 160 is pushing things on both fender and belt clearance, and needs a wider rim. I have a 160/70 in my bike, but it is not a bolt-in.
The fitted width of tyres is often quite different to the stated width. Over the years I have used a 140 which measured 139mm wide, a 150 which measured 153mm, a 160 which measures 167mm. Those measurements will also vary across the brands.
An early model is before '09 when the MOCO changed the frame and went to a 180 rear tire. You have an '03 from what I can see, so a 150 would be a tight but manageable fit. I had a 150 on my '04 RG. Like I said, if your alignment is off it will push the rear tire to one side and it is also possible for it to be misaligned vertically so that the top of the tire tilts to one side or the other. The early models have an engine, transmission, swingarm system that is more independent of the frame than the later models.
