Have mine hooked to battery and have a jumper cable fixed to jump a bike had a friend forget and left key on long even to kill his battery learned then after the rest of us pushed the bike for what seems like 10 miles these fueled injected rides will not roll start if battery is really dead so even though wire is small it will charge dead one enough to start. came in handy on my daughters bike last summer

Thanks guys sorry I should have been more clear I just brought the bike home and was wondering if that would work for a few days until I get the pig tails hooked up guy at the shop said it would but was wanting a second opinion... I have the pig tails just have to find time to do it but it's still cold here in northern Indiana ( go figure I bought a new bike and Mother Nature isn't cooperating) and don't wanna drain the batt from the cold as my garage isn't heated.

New SG? If so, I think you've already thought about it too long. Few days in the cold won't hurt it. Take 15 minutes to put the leads on the battery when you get a chance.

I use the clips provided with the battery tender and hook it up to the starter + and the ground to the allen bolt on the tranny. Works great! Been doing that for many years, with no problems

on my softail i clip it to the circuit breaker that goes to the battery and then ground it to a bolt holding the exhaust on. works great and have been doing like this for years. battery is 7 years old and going strong, but next battery i put in i'll hook up the pig tails to it.

don't think that it will work , since the positive lead to the starter isn't hot unless the starter solenoid is engaged. you could do from the starter solenoid lead that goes to the battery
