Default Driver Rubber Foot Pads Install???

I removed the right side driver's foot rest to install the Harley Heel Guard. I removed the rubber cushion as per instructions but cannot get it re installed. The rubber "nipples", yeah I know...anyways they will not go back through the holes.
Any suggestions or know how? I am afraid too use pliers or anything for fear they will rip or tear if I pull them...help please.

They are difficult but I have used a bit of dish soap and pliers to work them through with good success

Exactly what I did! Pulling with the pliers stretches the wide part and it pulls through easily

Running them under hot water for a minute makes it even easier.
