Manual Reverse
I only use my reverse in emergency situations and would also choose the most economical option if a repair was needed.. After three years with my Freewheeler, most "emergencies" are avoidable. My time with big two wheelers and declining strength taught me to park my trike with a predetermined exit plan that doesn't rely on a reverse gear. I definitely wouldn't want to ride without a functioning reverse.
I decided for now to go with motor rebuild kit as a quick sort of band aid fix till I can get more info, I figured after market kit for 119$ for now will suffice. Cant be any worse than the factory motor LOL. The two manual kits I was looking at are from Motor trike and eurowingsusa.mmd according to eurowings you have to purchase a separate additional kit for hydraulic clutch and "guarantee" it wont leak. Moto trike didn't say anything about that. One does have a back up beeper LOL a must.
As for leaks it is just not an issue.
Yes! I had a manual reverse fail! on my 2008 Ultra Classic. Was sitting at a stop light in a busy intersection waiting for the light to turn green. Hit the throttle and bike "hit a wall" and fell over in the intersection with me and my wife on board. The detent spring had broken and the reverse had been activated without my knowing!
Not funny, 2000 miles from home at the time.
So yes, they can fail.

I believe it was a Campion brand.
Evidently with the detent spring broken, the shifter was wabbling and vibrating with motor running at stop light. There is no "neutral" on the unit so if the shifter is not locked in by detent if vibrated into reverse without my knowing it. That was back in 2009.

I looked at the Baker and was it was $2700 plus installation!!!!
The one I have has been trouble free for 40,000 miles.
