Been through this .. as others indicated they destroy your old case with the serial number and the factory provides a new motor with the serial number.
Don't the replacement cases have a couple stars stamped in them. I think my 90 FLHS had the cases replaced and the vin had a couple stars either in front or behind the original VIN.
