This article applies to Dyna Glide models (1991-2016).

For jump starting a motorcycle, a jump box or another motorcycle is recommended, or a car battery with the motor shut down. With that being said, I have jump-started my motorcycles from running cars many times over the years, and I have never had any issues. But overloading the electrical system is a real possibility and only you can decide if it is worth the risk. Another option to consider is using a "push-start" or "bump-start" method, but I won't get into how to do that for now. I will provide a link on how to push-start a motorcycle at the bottom of this article if you are so inclined to learn. It is an easy trick that can save you a lot of headache.

Warning

Do not attempt to jump-start your Dyna using a running car. A running car provides enough energy to possibly fry your electrical system.

Materials Needed

  • Jumper cables or a Jump box
  • A running motorcycle (if using jumper cables)

Step 1 – Connect jumper cables to good battery

If using a pair of jumper cables from another vehicle, connect them to the good battery first. If using a jump box, skip to Step 2.

Warning

Do not let the jumper cables' ends touch each other while connected to a battery!

Step 2 – Connect your jumper cables to your battery

Attach the positive cable to the positive terminal (red) first. Then connect the negative cable to the negative terminal (black), or another good ground on the bike's frame or engine. Take care not to touch the jumper cable ends to each other.

Step 3 – Start your bike

In certain cases, your battery may need a few seconds to charge before starting. After you let the battery charge for a few seconds, start your Dyna like usual, taking care not to knock the jumper cables off. If using a jump box, just turn the switch to "ON" and you should be able to start the bike.

Step 4 – Disconnect jumper cables from your battery

Once your Dyna has been started and is running, disconnect the jumper cables from your battery terminals. Disconnect the negative cable first, and then the positive. Take care not to hit the cables against each other, as this will cause an arc of electricity that could damage your equipment or harm you.
