This article applies to the Harley Davidson Softail (2000-2014).

Unlike automobiles, stereo systems are few and far between on most motorcycles, because there really isn't a lot of room for them. Many people just use their smartphone and wireless earbuds, or even helmet speakers. However, for those of you interested in being able to fly down the highway, while blasting your favorite tunes, there are options available to you. Handlebar speakers mount directly onto your handlebars and connect to a separate head unit/amplifier, or have their own built-in amplifier and run off your MP3 player or phone. Here's the scoop.

Materials Needed

  • Handlebar speaker set
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Multimeter
  • Wire cutter
  • Wire splicing clips
  • Wire tires
  • Loctite
  • Soldering iron w/Solder (Optional)

Step 1 – Mount the amplifier

Amplifiers are not necessarily a separate unit, some are built into the speakers and they vary in size and weatherproof-ness. Most amplifiers in these kits are small and can mount onto the lower portion of the frame.

  • First attach the amp to its bracket using the supplied bolts.
  • Then locate an area to install the bracket. A common spot is located on the crash bar, on the A-frame.
  • Secure the amp in place.

Step 2 – Secure the amp wire harness

Route the wire harness for the amp throughout the frame and onto the handle bars. Zip-tie the harness onto each part of the frame.

Step 3 – Mount the speakers

Each kit will come with its only special mounting bracket for the speakers. Use the bracket that fits onto your Softail and install them onto each handlebar. Use blue Loctite on the screws to ensure they do not loosen and fall off while riding.

Step 4 – Route the speaker and amp wires

Take the harness from the speakers and carefully route them along the handlebars. Locate the head unit or MP3 device and route the 3.5mm amplifier cable and speaker wires to it.

Step 5 – Wire the amp and speakers

Using the included amplifier harness connect the amp and run the power wires to the battery terminal, making sure to safely ground the negative wire. Using a multimeter, locate a 12v accessory wire on the motorcycle and splice the speaker wires to it. Connect the speakers into the amplifier. Once everything is secure, you are finished.

Handlebar Speakers Review

Handlebar speaker systems differ in size, sound output capacity and available amplifiers. Less expensive units generally do not carry amplifiers and connect directly to the available head unit, while others use an amplifier to increase the overall sound quality and clarity of the music. Most kits also include MP3 capabilities, which allows you to connect a phone or music playing device directly to the system. Instead of picking a kit off on a whim, why don't you check out some of the best handlebar speaker sets available for your Softail.

Do you consider yourself to be a fancy rider? The J&M handlebar speaker set is arguably the best on the market. The internal amplifier allows you to remove the worry of shortening out an external amp, while allowing the speakers to blast any type of music. The speakers play crisp and clear sound and plug directly into your factory harness. Just as all of the other kits listed here, the kit requires a 12v lead in order to properly work. Recommended for those of you who don't mind spending a few extra dollars for quality.

Pro Tip

In terms of usability and overall costs, handlebar speakers are a good way to produce to loud sound you would want on your bike. However, depending on how loud your location is, it may not be the best in invest in something that still will not produce the same clear sound headphones have. So prior to making this purchase, make sure it is worth your time and money to install them.
