Direct Link Tuner by Technno Research
Anybody had any experience with this mapping system? Spoke to an indy shop who also use SERT but they seemedto favor this product.
Apparently it is not traceable in the ECM.
Thanks

Is it a complete programable replacement ECU? I went to the www.technoresearch.com site and it appears that it is, but not sure. If it is, I'm confident that you will find the cost much more then a SERT program plus tuningfor your existing ECM. When I answer the popular question as to, "what tuning system should I go with?" I usually reply, "find the best tuner you can find and go with whatever they are confortable with." But a complete ECU replacement seems a little extreme. Hell, I'm using an S&S VFI programmable replacement ECU in my turbo UltrabecauseSERT was not available and am strongly consideringgoing back to a stock ECM and programming it with SERT for more tuning flexability. Anyone have a spare '01' ECM laying around?
It is very similar to the SERT in capabilities. But it is only used at Direct-Link tuning centers. It cost less than the SERT because you only need to purchase the "Key" and the tuning center owns the software used to tune. This ties you to a tuner that uses Direct-Link. This is only really an issue if you plan on doing more engine mods in the future and expect to have to remap on occassion. Although if you don't plan on making any map changes yourself you would not have a need for the software.
According to what you are stateing, it is not a separate ECM, you directly program the factory ECM like SERT. I sure would want to have a lot of confidence in the capabilities of the tuning center and hope that they are around for awhile. If the center gave a custom tune and went out of business, would the customer have to start from scratch somewhere else?
I tune with it all the time. It is the least expensive alternative on the market for tuning the Delphi or Magnetti-Marelli ECU directly. The customer will end up with a USB key that is locked to there ECU and I give them their tune file as well. Direct Link has tuning centers and distributors all over the country(list is on their web site). If you do a big bore kit all you need is the USB key and another tune. No add on hardware at all.
The user license is saved onto a USB dongle instead of the interface dongle like a SERT, SEST or TTS. You pay for the software user license up front regardless, it is just built into the tuning cost. You walk out with a tune and a USB dongle but no way to make any adjustments yourself, you have to go back to a tuning shop. And because you already paid up front for the license, it may cost you less money for the retune. I dunno for sure.
So in concept its not any different than SERTs or SESTs or TTS, no module is left on the bike, and there is a piece of hardware you maintain that gives you a license to use the tuning tools.
I don't know if Direct Link provides any better tools to the tuner. I think there was a thread awhile ago. Its not intended for consumer use anyway.
If you could care less about DIY, and the tuner you trust says they want to use Direct Link, go along with it.

i know this is an older post but i wanted to bring it back up as technoresearch made some serious improvements to thier software over the last year. i have run this tuner on my last 2 bikes (09 flhx) and now my (11 fltrx)
my tuner is about the only one i trust with performance...and he prefered the technoresearch over about anything else...some reasons why you ask?
1. tuner is a lower cost than the compareables. tts, sepst, ect,
2. as far as the tuners themselves go its a better software interface ie tts will only let you have 1 window open at a time like the fuel, pulse width ect.. where the direct link will allow them to have both the front and rear open at the same time so they can see in real time what both cylinders are doing.. this is better for the consumer!
3. since you can have both windows or mutiple windows open at the same time for that matter it will allow them to make changes simult which saves time...
4 the more efficent the software is the more time your dyno guy can spend tweaking your bike...
just thought i would share as my dyno guy is really helpful and took the time to explain a lot of things as he was tuning ..
if your looking for a dyno guy in the midwest pm me and i can put you in touch as he is about the best around in my opnion....the numbers and dyno sheets speak for themselves!

I'm trying to decide between the DirectLink setup and TTS right now... Litterally buying one or the other on Monday. Hard part for me is I don't know this tuner at all.... never worked with him before.... Actually this is the first time I've ever dealt with an Indy shop, always worked with the dealer.
The DirectLink worries me because I tweak my bikes alot, I have future upgrades planned within the next 6 months, and for if some reason I don't care for the tune, or whatever reason I don't return to this shop, I don't want a system that no one understands, or simply isn't willing to work with.
I called a couple shops that Techno Research had listed on their website for tuning centers and unfortunately, not one of them recommended the DirectLink. No one gave specifics, but everyone one of them tried to steer me toward either SERT, TTS, TMAX, something else.... Didn't really instill confidence.
Any other opinions for or against??

Two different Indy's localy use this tuner. I have had great luck with the product on 2 different bikes. The tune on my ultra is awesome. Product is fine but the guy that did my first bike didn't do as good a job as the second guy did on the Ultra.
