Hey guys, could someone explain in simple terms just what the race tuner consists of...as in what hardware is attached to the bike and what software comes with the sert. Just how do you adjust your air/fuel ratio or is it something that the dealer needs to do? I am familiar with tuners like the V&H which piggyback onto your efi control module, but wonder if there are any advantages or drawbacks to the screamin eagle tuner.......Thanks!
Nothing gets attached to the bike permanently. The SERT is a little orange box that you connect between the bike's ECU and your laptop for downloading the code only (or if you are using the data log feature). After downoalds (or data logging) the SERT gets unplugged from the ECU. The software to operate the SERT does NOT come with the tuner. You can either have your local HD dealer do the tuning, or you can purchase the software CD separately and do it yourself. The software CD sells for $30.00.
The Screaming Eagle and TTS Mastertune race tuners actually reprogram all of the engine management settings on your ECM. They only connect to the bike to tune and then disconnect. They are fairly complex but are capable for those who like to do DIY tuning. However, unless you are fairly confident in your ability, I would recommend you do some research into finding a competent dyno tuner who has experience tuning HD bikes with the race tuner you buy as most are different and each have their own unique technicalities.
Me, I prefer the TTS Mastertune system as they were the inventors of the original SERT.
If you choose to purchase the CD, is it a generic CD which allows you an infinite number of adjustments to your air/fuel mixture over many different rpm's or do you purchase a specific CD for your model (88, 96, 103 etc) based on the modifications you have made (air cleaner, pipes, cam ) sort of like the way you "program" a V&H tuner? Do you use your laptop to download your chosen settings? Can they be changed at any time? I have heard something about a sert being "married" if you will to a specific motorcycle. Does that mean that you cannot use it on another bike? What about if you purchase a bike used that has been previously tuned with a sert and you don't have the sert? How could you make any further changes down the line? Could a Harley download ever over-write a program modified by a sert (completed by owner or dealer) or is your ecm modified or changed forever, and unable to ever be returned to stock factory settings? Thanks for all replies....
SERT is married to the bike it is first used on ---buyer beware. A lot of people try to sell used sert's. I like my SERT but it is not as user friendly as some of the other tuners on the market. With that said I would buy another SERT if I needed one. JMO

As stated the SERT marries to the ECM on the bike. It is an interface that allows software on a pc to communicate with the ECM (computer) on the motorcylce. The SERT, SEPST are also reffered to as VCI's (vehicle communiaction interface). The software you install on your computer depends on the actual VCI you have. SERT, SEST, SEPST and TTS Mastertune are all differn't types of VCI's. The latest version of the Screaming Eagle is the SEPST (Screamin Eagle Pro Super Tuner). Once the software is loaded on the computer you find a starting MAP for the build on your bike. The MAP get edited then is sent to the ECM via the VCI. MAPS can be edited and sent as many times as you like. If you change you build (i.e. larger engine, differn't cams, etc.) you can stat with a differn't MAP for the new build. If you have a bike that was tuned with SERT but you no longer have the SERT, you would have to purchase either another SERT or VCI to do any editing, Whenever a new MAP is loaded on teh ECM (either with SERT, download from HD, or from another VCI the MAP that is being replaced is lost. So unless you have a backup saved it's gone. HD can always reload the stock calibration (MAP) back into the bike.
