Rebuilding a Bike
I am trying to figure out what I need to check on a friends fathers Harley Davidson thatwas involved in an accident on Friday. After his shift at the plant my friends dad was riding home. Somehow, he lost control of the motorcycle at the Texas City Wye. The bike slid in the mud at about 40mph. It then hit a divot in the mud, causing the bike to flip over. Bob couldn't get away from the bike when it flipped, and it rolled over him.
I got the bike Saturday morning and began cleaning all the mud off it, in hopes of getting it fixed by the time his dadgot out of the hospital.
The exhaust pipes and front fender are broken, as well as the headlight. The front forks are damaged, because the handlebars have about 3 inches of play. The tank is dented and fairly scratched-up, but that isn't so important right now.
Unfortunately my friends father took a turn for the worse Saturday night, and passed-away.So nowI'm trying to get it running again somy friendcan ride it to his fathers funeral service.
What things should I be looking for? I have rebuilt many cars in the past, but this is no car.
I strongly suggest you give it a very careful going over and not try to get it running in time for the funeral. Really check the frame and swingarm carefully for damage.
If you want to put it back together for your friend, how about posting what kind of bike it is. Many of us have stock take-off parts laying around and some of us might be willing to part with some of them to help in the cause.
Afterwards you can break it all down, part it out or rebuild it.
Sorry to hear that he didn't make it. My Dad had a real close call this summer, he made it out in one piece, but it scared the livin hell out of the both of us.
Took the front fender off because it was pushed onto tire, and elevated the front. Both discs appear to be straight and do not bind in the calipers. I will remove it tonight and straighten the forks. The two postswhere the handlebars attach -one of those is bent, as are the handlebars.
No amount of beating would straighten the pipes, as they were pulled from the attaching clamps. The machined-on barb that goes into the exhaust manifold, was pulled from the pipes. So I scrounged around yesterday and found a Supertrapp 2 into 1 exhaust that will fit.
I'll look at it more tonight, and get back with more information.
I don't know what parts are interchangeable between models.
As far as switches, gauges, levers, master cylinder, hoses, wiring- not a scratch. Rear fender, seat, rear lights...All lights except headlight-not a scratch. One mirror was broken. A small dent in the right side of the fuel tank, about the size of a quarter. He skidded the motorcycle most of the length of the accident, with his front wheel pointed in the direction of the skid, so it didn't actually slideon its side(poor choice of words on my part). He appears to have skidded, caughtthe tires ina divot, motorcycle went down on top of rider, rolling over him, before coming to rest. The light damage to the motorcycle, coupled withthe fact that he rode most of it out had me thinking he'd make it...Hence, my wanting to fix it for him. I guess the motorcycle must have come down on him pretty hard though.
