Default How many home made parts on your bike?

Most of us have had occasion to want/need a certain part that we can't find commercially and have wound up making it ourselves. So, how many home made parts on your current ride?

Personally, I only have 1 right now but that will change this winter. Some of us less tall riders like the forward controls, but our legs just don't seem to stretch that far. Everyone and their brother makes forward extensions from 2" on up, but no one seems to make forward control setbacks. (call them setbacks because forward reducers sounds strange)

I've fabricated my own out of 1/4" stainless steel plate and while they're still a little rough around the edges, they've been on for over a year and have worked out very well, setting the forward contols back about 1.5".

We have a lot of members who are pretty clever when it comes to finding solutions to their problems, I just throught that this would be a good thread to share those flashes of brilliance with others and who knows, you may just help someone else along the way.

Only myself when I'm sittin' on it I wish I had the skills and tools to make some things though. I was always interested in steel fabrication.

My side business is welding. I have the tools, knowledge and skills to make lots of parts. Zero, nada, zip. Haven't come up with a want or need that isn't commercially available for less than it would cost me to make it. A lot of that is due to the high levels of fit and finish demanded. It's a lot of work to get a part to look like it belongs on a $20K hHarley - not so much on a trailer to haul said Harley.

If I needed or wanted something that wasn't available, I'd make it. Just haven't found that need or want yet!

I have only made the tank lift so far. I'm working on handle bars, sissy bar, and license plate mount. I would much rather build my own stuff even if it's cheaper and faster to buy something off the internet. The only thing holding me back is time. Most of my free time is spent riding or with the wife and baby. Lately my time at the shop has been spent filling orders.

Fabbed a lot for my 75 sporty and 84 FXR. For the 89 FLHT, fabbed a quick disconnect tour pac, quick disconnect speakers, part of the wiring harnnes to accept a radio, installed 4 speakers into a fairing made for 2, and a couple of incendental brackets...

On my old '92 FLHS, I fabbed forward control mounts, rear brake pedal, front saddle bag mounts after removing guards, shaved rear fender, bag mounted 39 Ford tailights, and some other minor stuff.

I have not made any bits for the new bike yet.

Most of my fabbing has been fiberglass and lighting... and nicety, not necessity. Lights in the bags are from a Nissan Maxima bumper lights (got aftermarket white ones). but they were single filament bulbs, so I made a 2 row/16 light LED setup to fit inside the housingand epoxied it to be "sealed".
