The engine light started coming on after I washed my bike this weekend. At first I thought it was just water in a connector but it's been 3 days and the light is coming on more often. It comes and goes but when it's on the bike loses power and starts spitting and sputtering. Trouble is I don't know how to make it tell me what the error code is. Any help??
Before I get all the normal smart a$$ comments... I did do a search (for an hour) before I decided to post.I'm sure the info is already out there but I can't find it.
I can't get my laptop to connect to the ECM to pull the error code (don't know if the two are related)
Of course once I do get the code...stick around..I'll need help translating it.
Looks like a 2005 RKC. Before you pull your hair out go here...........https://www.hdforums.com/m_43975/tm.htm
This will tell you how to get the code and what it means.
What was the problem? In case others experience the same thing.
Ride safe,
Not sure what the problem is but at least now I have the error codes.
It had 3 codes:
P0152
P0261
U1016
I wasn't sure which ones were current and which were captured in history so i cleared them and went for a spin. 10 miles in she starts sputtering again. Get home and check the codes again and she's holding one code--- P0261 loks like a front injector problem of some sort ...P0261 Front Injector Open/Low EFI
Sounds like something in the harness.
I had a U1016 that would give me an intermittentsecurity light after start up. The Dealer finally replaced the ECM. Good luck and let me know how you make out.
When you take your bike to the dealer do not clear any codes. I'm told that nothing can be diagnosed without codes in the system.
I cleared the codes so that I could tell what was "history" and what was current. The guys at the shop know me well enough to know if I tell them the code was in there..they will take my word for it.And if it's a current code...it'll come back.
I mentioned that I washed the bike Saturday morning before a ride and the light started coming on afterwards. I still feel like the problem is water somewhere because it is an intermittent problem. Tonight I'll pull the console off the tank and check the wiring. RK consoles are bad about letting water get in under the seal (and it doesn't help that I dry my bike with a shop vac).
And I think I have an answer for not being able to communicate with my software. I normally use "com 1" with the SERT software to talk to the bike..well last night the software wouldn't allow me to choose com 1. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what the conflict was. This morning at work, it dawned on me....I'm a controls engineer and have RS Linx installed on my laptop. That application uses com 1 (and auto starts on boot). That's why (i think) that com 1 was not available to the sert software.
Got it !!!!! Went "under the hood" tonight and found the problem. The electrical plug going to the front ejector had backed out just enough to cause an intermittant problem. Snapped the baby back on & ran for an hour... no trouble light. Problem solved.
