Default top end noise

I went crazy this winter, painted my EG Standard engine (there's another thread), and installed an engine chrome kit. In order to install the upper/lower rocker covers and the bases at the bottom of the pushrods, the top end had to come apart. Now that everything is back together and running, I have a clatter in the FRONT cylinder that doesn't seem typical, or at least I don't remember it that way... Anyone have any constructive thoughts? Could it be that one of the push rods didn't seat correctly? I have more determination than I do experience...

When building harleys, experience is supreme, take it to someone and have the valves adjusted.

Valves adjusted? There are no valve adjustments. It sounds like you do not have adjustable pushrods so rule that out.....

There are two things that could have happened. The first is that a lifter is bleed down and just needs time to pump up. Sometimes, this may take a few miles.

The second is what happened to a buddy of mine. He did rocker box cover swaps like you and ended up with a noisy engine. He called me in the middle of the night to help. We went thru the work he had done. I discovered, that when he torqued down the rocker shafts, the failed to rotate the cam to it's lowest position. By doing such, he was getting a false tq reading and not getting the rocker arms seated correctly. Just a smidge of a gap caused it to sound like a monkey was in there beating on the engine witha hammer.

Most anyone who redoes a harley top end s#it cans the crappy stock pushrods and installs the adjustable. But he did not, then your right, no adjustment.
