Don't know waht to belive and I trust the experiences and opinions of the forum members so here goes. I brought this up here before about a rapping noise I'm getting when ridding between 2200 and 2800 RPMs. Checked the compensator nut torque and found OK. Had it to a dealer and an indy and they both said they don't hear anything. Just had it to another indy and he said that the entire engine is noisey and should have a complete teardown. I told him that I just had the pistons replaced due to the bottom jugs gaskets were leaking and when it was torn apart the mechanic found the one piston had a break in the spacing part between the rings. He said that the cylinder walls wern't scored so he hone and replaced the pistons with the same size. This new guy said it should have been bored 5 to 10 over because new pistons can be 3 thousands difference from one to the other. He also said that at 30,000 miles the valve springs are shot. Am I being hosed or should I have the engine tore down since the cam tensioners probably need replacing too. Will have to check the runout to see if hydraulic or gear.
Hey have you checked your cam chain tensioners? I am sure you have just asking. Also I had a similar issue. I could hear a noise I know was there and took it to 3 different shops for evaluation. All 3 couldn't find a thing. Ride it they said. So I did. Then it got louder. Just happens I was like 500 miles from home. My exhaust valve (rear head) was seizing in the guide. It would hang up. Sounded horrible. New exhaust valves and had the guides honed out a little over. Runs fine now...
Glider,
I have a 2001 Ultra. Stock 88. A little over a year ago, I started hearing a rapping noise as you describe in the same rpm range. I took the cam cover off to check the tensioners and they were fine. I had been wanting to do some performance improvements so while it was down I put in an SE 204 cam, new lifters and complete cam chest service(bearings, o-rings) and new tensioners. After it was complete, I had the same noise. Took it to 3 different shops all said that they didn't hear anything abnormal. It got to the point that I didn't even want to ride the bike for fear it would grenade on me. I checked every thing I could think of, rocker clearance, covers, pushrod tubes. All seemed ok. About a month ago, I got frustrated and took the rocker covers off again to see if I could find anything. What I found was that the rocker arms had been contacting the rocker stands on the pushrod side. I could not figure out how this would happen so I took out the rocker assemblies and took the rockers out of the stands(I had not done this before). I found that 2 of the rocker arms had excessive wear in the bushings and were out of round. You could move the rocker up and down on the rod and hear contact. I bought new rockers and installed them and the rapping noise went away. I would highly recommend that you check the tolerances of the rocker arm bushings before you do anything else. The wear was not obvious until I removed the rocker arms from the stands and actually inspected the bushings. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.
Thanks for the info. I think I'll have my mechanic check into this and all tolerance issues. I'll post when I have an outcome. Probable will be in a couple of weeks.

I would get another opinion.Call Dave at JD's Cycleworks in Bethleham,Pa.& arrange for him to take a look at it!!! He's a very honest guy & will do you right!!!
