Default Question about pipes and warranty with the dealer.

Hello all,

I just boughtan 07 Fatboy and I love it, but I don't love the stock exhaust. The dealer wanted about $1000.00 for V&H pipes and installation. THis is OUTRAGEOUS. Of course he told me that if I put the pipes on myself that it would void my warranty. Here is my question: If I go ahead and buy the pipes myself and put them on and later on something happens to the bike and I need to take it in to the dealer why can't I just bolt the stock exhaust pipes back on the bike before I take it in?? Will they know that I have taken them off?? I can't see how they would be able to tell that I have had another set of pipes on the bike. Would someone please give me some opinions on this idea. I hope nothing happens to the bike, but I damn sure don't wanna pay outta pocket for repairs either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and stay safe,
Trevor

tell that dealer they are full of ****, and never go back...
in fact please state the exact dealer it is.. and city/county..state
dont worry there might be others in your area here that can help with the situation you are facing

go find an independent shop
or if you are mechanically inclined do it yourself

you don't have to bolt back on the stock ones if your bike is in need of repair..
Id think its safe to say 90% of HD bikes have their exhaust modified

I agree with exactly what vertigo14 said. That dealer is an idiot and should be out of business. Go elsewhere. Its your bike do what you want (thats what Harley's are all about, even 07's) Who is this turkey? P.S. you should get out more often.

THanks for the reply,
I can put the pipes on myself, I have put aftermarket exhausts on every bike that I have ever owned. Since this is the first harley that I have ever owned I just was not sure about how strict the dealership was about the warranty. I can understand why they would try to tell a person this because they want you to buy all your **** from them and pay the outrageously high prices for the parts and the labor. I just don't want to put the pipes on and then when I take the bike in for the 1000 mile service they tell me "O, by the way your warranty is now voided". The dealer is Harley of North Texas in Carrollton, TX.
Thanks,
Trevor

Some simple stuff...

If you put on a part and having enough problems with it(and cant self fix it).. take it to an independent shop.. have them help the situation.
Of course if the part you put on caused a problem that you wanted warranty work done on, that might not be covered depending.....how it was damaged

Exhaust shouldn't cause you problems..but if you open up the bike's intake and exhaust you most likely should have her tuned..(a tuner w/ dyno, or a canned download)
Us HD dudes call that a Stage 1 setup..

HD dealers wouldn't ask you about your pipes at a 1000k service.. or tell you your warranty is voided either.

The Moss Magnasun act states that a warranty can not be voided because of an aftermarket part unless that after market part causes another part to break. The whole warranty can not be voided. For instance, if you put your pipes on and then your transmission goes out they can not deny you claim based on after market pipes, one thing had nothing to do with the other. Now if you put a PC III or even a SERT on your bike and then you EFI system goes out, then they can deny your claim because a non stock part could have caused the problem, but it is the responsibility of the dealer/ manufactuar of the vehicle to prove that your modificationscaused the malfunction do deny the claim.

Thanks for the info guys,

I figured that the dealer was blowin smoke up my ***, thats why I posted the question on here to get some replys. Like I said I have put exhaust systems on every bike I have ever had (street/dirt) and never had any issues with the dealer on warranty repairs. It really pisses me off that the salesman told me that, cause I though he was pretty straight forward kinda guy. I have sold/worked at a car dealership before so I know that just about all salesmen are shady! THanks for the help!!

Heck my Bassani Road rages cost half the entire fee that dealer is charging . I bought an Se Air Kit/PCIII/BAssanis for 1100.00
Took me about 3 hours to install the whole mess. But that was because I've never worked on a bike in my life. It was educational and made me feel closer to the bike. I will do all I can on my own. Plus I have friends that build bikes and if I get in a real bind - they are there. But HD's are quite simple machines when its all said and done - which is in part, why I love them so much.
