Ive changed 3 or 4 (ive forgotten) over the years on many different Ultras. The rack is a piece of crap . The tube is way too small.. They redesigned that part..but it still very weak. They used to use inserts to secure the boix to the rack.. but the inserts were so big that the hole weakened the tube...so now they send a bolt staright thru and secure it with a nut.
Im sure HD is well aware of this poor part but the refuse to make a corrcetion.
Its not that uncommon for the rack to break. I rented an Electra Glide in 1999 out of the Glendale,CA Fly & Ride & both sides broke halfway thru my trip. I was able to repair with duct tape & hose clamps. Its never happened on my own Ultra though. I figured that the rental bikes are rather beat on. (never by me of course). I guess if you go over the lbs. they rate them at they could break. The MOCO should just make them stronger than they are. Its not rocket science.
From 99 through 01 they all broke or are waiting to break, they were reinforced in 02 but were still fairly flimsey, I replaced three of them and went to a sturdier detachable rack.
