Motorcyclist deaths spike as helmet laws loosen. - USA Today 3/27/08
WASHINGTON — Death rates from motorcycle crashes have risen steadily since states began weakening helmet laws about a decade ago, according to a Gannett News Service analysis of federal accident reports.
Read the full article here. This should stir things up a bit.
I think it has more to do with larger faster motorcycles. Older people getting their first bike. Alcohol and motorcyle riding. More people riding, since there are more people= more idiots. And the fact that more kids are riding these sport bikes and thinking they are invincible.
Personally, I wear a helmet, but I don't care if anyone else does or not.
Couldn't have said it any better. 1998 vs 2008... more people on the roads, more people on bikes. Now if they could show the rate motorcycling has grown vs the rate at which deaths have increased that would be useful.

i agree 100 %. there are more deaths because there are more riders. and with gas prices going where they are going, there will be even more bikers. thus more bike accidents. the more bike accidents, the more bike deaths.
Here we go again. Glad I don't buy that newspaper. Seen those statistics before on this forum. I read the article and what stuck in my mind again was 42% of bikers killed were not wearing a helmet--that means 58% killed were wearing a helmet. Why push helmets? Odds favor no helmet. There are more riders and there are a million ways to screw up riding. We need fewer laws and to let Darwin's theories weed out the herd. Sometimes it sucks to be the herd.
Older people(cagers) retiring to southern states andnot paying enough attention to cyclists. People in general not paying enough attention to their driving. Stats can be bentany which way to fit the need of the article/point. Instead of concentrating on the end result, no helmet-no seatbelt, get to the"cause". Cager pulled out in front of motorcyclist, cager was drunk and ran over cyclist, etc.
they wont do that .it puts there rate at alot lower rate you got any where twice to three times the bikes out there now if not more.i will agree with you all on i do wear a helmet more than i use to. but to each there own and i think alot more people do with the fact it is there choice and not told to.

The graphs show number of fatalities per 10'000 registered motorcycles, so the number of motorcycles on the roads doesn't matter.

You're fooled by the statsitics. If only 5% ride without a helmet the numbers doesn't look so good anymore. 5% of the riders would then stand for 42% of the fatalities. What I'm saying is if you don't know how many people that ride without a helmet you can't draw any conclusions from those stats.
