Default BACKOFF WIG WAG DEAD - 2 months???

Mounted this Signal Dynamics BACKOFF WIG WAG per instructions between the two tour pak lights on my 05 Ultra.

Installed it perfectly back in March. GREAT directions. No issues. No problems. Easy install.

Everything was connected using wire nuts and electrical tape.

AWESOME unit. Love it. It did flash very fast - more so than the one on their demo page???

We just noticed no wig wagging and no brake lights on the trunk today. Just running lights.
(Center brake light always works of course - not wired in).

Unwired everything - went back to the stock setup - my OEM brake lights work just fine.

Re-wired the wig wag - and again just the running lights - no wig wagging.

Tried mode 1 and mode 2 - no go. All wires/connections were triple checked for continuity.

After trying for a third time, concluded the wig wag just does not work anymore period. It is dead. Under warrantee - should get another no charge I hope from the manufacturer!!!

EVER HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE???

I would send it back. As a matter of fact I have installed quite a few of the Back Off XP units for friends including one on my own bike. I've done about 6 or 7 installs all on Ultras or Roadkings and had two go bad including the one on my bike. I installed the replacement on mine and the other bike about a year ago and they've been fine ever since.

The first unit that went bad I sent back to the distributor for the exchange of a new one. The second failure I called Signal Dynamics with a "hey, what the hell is up with my experiencing two failed units already?". They did admit to having an issue and sent me another unit with exchange for free. Like I said earlier, it's been on a year now and no more problems.

For installing the replacement unit, it would be best to solder the wires vice wire nuts and use heat shrink tubing to seal them away from the elements and contacting ground. That may not have been the problem but over time I can see wire nuts being a problem.

Its understandable that most folks do not even own a soldering iron or pencil. They are not to expensive at radio shack and most now come in a kit with solder and flux. Just don't buy acid core solder or acid flux. That is for your copper pipes not wires! It will corrode them off.

Soldering is very simple and being careful you can do the job like a "pro" in a matter of a few test connections before you hit the wires on the bike.

just my $o.o2 --- good luck with the new install.

GARY @ Signal Dynamics is NUMBER ONE in customer service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I called him Monday morning 4/23 about the dead wig wag and a replacement unit was on my doorstep today - 4/25 - two days later - UPS Blue - and free shipping!!!!

New one works fine - and I soldered the connections - thanks for the tips fellas.

I highly recommend Signal Dynamics for any/all signal mods.

Their customer service is as good or better than PEZ (hogtunes.com).

They even asked for the defective one back so they could analyze the defect!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully this new one lasts a little longer

THANKS GARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FOLLOWUP SUNDAY 4/30:

My new WIG WAG lasted only a couple days on my 05 Ultra????

I followed the attached instructions PERFECTLY - right to a "T". I am into electronics and know what I am doing. This time I soldered ALL connections and wrapped them heavily in electrical tape rather than using wire nuts. I also covered the wig wag unit with a breathable foam so it would not contact anything incidentally. Nothing, I mean absolutely nothing could short and my trunk is empty. Worked great for a couple days. Now it is DEAD.

Went back to my stock setup and everything is working fine again. This is a bummer. I want one that works.

Any ideas what is going on???

THANKS GUYS!!!!

As all electronic devices, either module or components it does not take much to make them go bad. It maybe that you have received couple in a batch that has defects. I'd contact the vender and let them know what all has happened. They usually test the modules when returned but short of seeing holes blown into them or smashed to bits they have not much a way to determine what the cause of failure is. Most the time when a rash of items are coming back then they start getting more aggressive on the manufacturing process and or the venders which they get parts from, to start tighting up on Quality Assurance for testing, durability and other items they deem of importance.

Sorry to hear that unit number 2 has failed.

Ram,

THANKS for the advice - obviously the problem is on their end because my setup always goes back to stock and it works absolutely fine.

And both times Signal Dynamics had "problems" trying to find me one - out of stock - but I did get these two from them direct - maybe the last of the bad batches as you mention.

I guess you can't expect a company to use valuable resources to investigate the defect when the product/components are "cheap" and maybe going out of production???

Sounds like a crap shoot every time from here on out.

I did ask them if they could send me a refurbished and fully tested unit next time rather than a new one!!!!

BUT I must say they are standup folks with great customer service.

Will keep you posted.

Dave H. thx

Just for everyone's edification - this is the response from Signal Dynamics on my two dead Wig Wags:

>>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>

Dave,

The replacement shipped today. One of the engineers just left my desk after explaining what they found in the last module you returned to us. Somehow, the program in the microchip - it is like a small computer - was gone. There was no information left in the chip telling the module how to function.

A couple of the engineers are going to play with the module more - they cut the case off so they can get to the circuit board - to see if they can figure out what happened - or how it could have happened.

Gary

INTERESTING HUH??? Nothing I did.

I just hope the THIRD one coming tomorrow night (that was bench tested for a day supposedly) doesn't go kaput too - then I'll be perturbed!!!!

Will keep you posted on the results here.

Hey, you are right, great customer service for a CHEAP $40 gadget. Amazing.

But Gary tells me they sell'em by the thousands every month???

I have NEVER seen one in Wisconsin. How about Canada???
